Key Points

  • Southwest Airlines lowered its 2026 adjusted earnings forecast to $2.60–$2.85 per share, down from its previous range of $3.25–$4.25.
  • Third-quarter operating revenue reached a record $8.4 billion, but fuel expenses surged by $821 million year over year.
  • Higher fares and strategic changes are boosting revenue, yet rising jet fuel prices are limiting the airline’s ability to translate those gains into stronger profits.

Southwest Airlines has sharply reduced its 2026 profit outlook as soaring fuel costs erode the benefits of higher fares and a sweeping business overhaul. The revision highlights a broader challenge for US airlines: even when travel demand remains resilient and ticket prices rise, higher energy costs can absorb much of the resulting revenue growth and put pressure on profit margins.

Lower Earnings Guidance Despite Record Revenue

The Dallas-based carrier now expects adjusted earnings of $2.60–$2.85 per share for 2026, compared with its previous forecast of $3.25–$4.25. The midpoint of the revised range is below analysts’ average estimate of $2.85 per share. Southwest also projected fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.55–$0.80 per share, falling short of the roughly $0.81 expected by analysts.

The weaker outlook contrasts with a strong third-quarter performance. Operating revenue reached a record $8.4 billion, up 21.2% from the same period in 2025. Average passenger fares increased by nearly 27%, while adjusted earnings rose to $0.66 per share from $0.11 a year earlier, exceeding analysts’ expectations. The results demonstrate that Southwest’s commercial changes are generating additional revenue, although higher costs are limiting the financial benefit.

Jet Fuel Prices Put Pressure on Profit Margins

Fuel has emerged as the primary obstacle to stronger earnings. Southwest’s average fuel cost reached $3.92 per gallon in the third quarter, above its earlier assumption of $3.70–$3.75. Fuel expenses increased by $821 million year over year, reducing adjusted earnings per share by an estimated $1.08.

The airline expects fuel costs to reach approximately $4.55 per gallon in the fourth quarter, based on the forward price curve as of October 15. If prices remain elevated, Southwest may struggle to convert higher ticket prices into comparable improvements in profitability. Geopolitical tensions and disruptions in energy markets add uncertainty to fuel-cost planning across the airline industry.

Southwest’s Business Transformation Faces a Cost Test

Southwest has been reshaping its business model to attract higher-spending travelers and generate more revenue from additional products and fees. The carrier, historically known for open seating and free checked bags, has moved away from several longstanding practices as it seeks to improve commercial performance and operational efficiency.

For the fourth quarter, Southwest expects capacity to increase by 3%–4% year over year. However, expanding flights while fuel remains expensive could put further pressure on margins unless demand and pricing remain strong. Other US airlines are confronting similar challenges, with elevated fuel costs prompting the industry to reconsider capacity growth and prioritize profitable routes over market share.

Investors will be monitoring fuel prices, booking trends, fare increases and the company’s progress in controlling operating expenses. Southwest plans to outline its longer-term financial targets at an investor event in March 2027. Until then, the central question is whether its revenue gains and business transformation can offset persistent energy-cost pressures. The balance between pricing power, disciplined capacity management and fuel expenses will be crucial in determining the airline’s earnings trajectory.
