Key Points

  • Netflix reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $3.66 billion, up 44% year over year, while revenue increased 11.8% to $12.87 billion.
  • Shares fell 4.1% in after-hours trading after the company lowered its 2026 advertising revenue forecast to $2.7 billion and issued a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings outlook.
  • Slower revenue growth, intensifying streaming competition and leadership changes are putting greater pressure on Netflix to demonstrate sustainable audience and advertising growth.

Netflix delivered higher third-quarter profits, but its latest results failed to reassure investors concerned about slowing growth and the monetization of its advertising business. The streaming company reported stronger earnings for July through September 2026, yet its reduced advertising forecast and cautious fourth-quarter outlook sent shares lower, illustrating how expectations for future performance can outweigh solid reported results.

Higher Profits Fail to Offset Growth Concerns

Netflix generated net income of $3.66 billion, or $0.87 per diluted share, in the third quarter, compared with $2.55 billion, or $0.59 per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 11.8% to $12.87 billion from $11.51 billion, broadly matching analyst expectations. Operating income increased to $4.46 billion, while the operating margin expanded to 34.6%, compared with 28.2% in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

The improved profitability reflects the company’s ability to combine subscription growth, price increases and advertising revenue with disciplined cost management. However, Netflix noted that the stronger-than-expected operating margin was primarily attributable to the timing of expenses. That distinction matters because investors need to determine whether the improvement reflects lasting operational gains or temporary financial effects.

Revenue growth has also slowed compared with earlier periods, increasing scrutiny of the company’s ability to sustain its expansion as its subscriber base matures in established markets.

Advertising Forecast Cut Triggers Market Reaction

Netflix shares fell 4.1% to $65.90 in after-hours trading following the results. The company reduced its forecast for 2026 advertising revenue from $3 billion to $2.7 billion, citing delays in rolling out advertising products. The revision raised concerns about the speed at which Netflix can establish advertising as a meaningful additional revenue stream alongside subscriptions.

The company also projected fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $13.44 billion, slightly below analyst expectations of around $13.5 billion. Its forecast for diluted earnings per share of $0.67 also fell short of market expectations. The weaker outlook suggests that near-term profitability could face pressure even as revenue continues to grow.

Netflix has been expanding its advertising-supported offering to diversify revenue and attract price-sensitive viewers. However, advertising growth depends on more than subscriber numbers: it also requires effective ad technology, sufficient advertiser demand and the ability to deliver measurable value to marketing clients.

Competition and Leadership Changes Add to the Challenge

Netflix is facing intensifying competition from Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other entertainment platforms. YouTube and TikTok also compete for audience attention, making engagement and viewing time increasingly important measures of strategic performance.

The company recently announced plans to eliminate approximately 1,000 positions, representing about 6% of its workforce. It also said Peter Rice would replace Bela Bajaria as chief content officer on October 26. These changes come as Netflix seeks to refine its content strategy and strengthen its ability to attract and retain viewers.

Investors will be watching upcoming releases, advertising performance, subscriber engagement and operating margins for evidence that Netflix can restore confidence in its growth trajectory. The central challenge is to maintain pricing power and profitability while expanding advertising and competing for viewers. Strong content performance and faster advertising execution could improve sentiment, but continued deceleration in revenue growth may leave the stock vulnerable to further volatility.
