Key Points
- OpenAI reported elevated errors and latency affecting ChatGPT Work users for roughly three hours.
- Microsoft said users could experience degraded functionality across various Exchange Online services, with thousands of outage reports recorded.
- The disruptions underscore the increasing importance of reliability as businesses become more dependent on cloud productivity and enterprise AI platforms.
Simultaneous Service Disruptions Hit Major Workplace Platforms
Microsoft Outlook and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work experienced service disruptions on Monday, affecting widely used tools across business communication and artificial intelligence workflows. OpenAI reported elevated errors and latency affecting ChatGPT Work users, while Microsoft said some Exchange Online functions were experiencing degraded performance. The incidents were not reported as connected, but the disruptions highlight the growing operational importance of cloud-based workplace platforms.
ChatGPT Work Experiences Errors and Latency
OpenAI said ChatGPT Work had been experiencing elevated errors and latency for roughly three hours, with users across multiple subscription plans potentially unable to start or continue tasks. The company said it was working on a mitigation, while its ChatGPT account acknowledged the disruption and said engineers were working toward a fix.
User reports tracked by Downdetector showed more than 1,100 reports involving OpenAI products at around 2:24 p.m. ET, following a higher peak earlier in the day. For enterprise customers, even temporary interruptions can become increasingly consequential as AI systems move beyond experimentation and into workflows involving documents, spreadsheets, presentations, applications and other complex tasks.
Microsoft Exchange Online Also Reports Degraded Functionality
Microsoft separately reported problems affecting Exchange Online, the cloud infrastructure supporting functions across its Microsoft 365 ecosystem. The company said users could experience degraded functionality with various Exchange Online services and that it was reviewing service telemetry and diagnostic information to identify the source of the problem.
Reported issues for Microsoft Outlook approached 4,600 users on Downdetector shortly after 2:24 p.m. ET, with reports also peaking earlier. Because Outlook is deeply embedded in corporate communication, disruptions can have a broader operational impact than the number of direct reports suggests, particularly for organizations that rely heavily on cloud-hosted email and collaboration tools.
OpenAI and Microsoft Relationship Faces a More Complex Landscape
The outages also come against the backdrop of an increasingly complicated relationship between the two companies. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, with its total investment later rising to $13 billion as their strategic partnership expanded. However, the companies have increasingly competed in areas of artificial intelligence and enterprise software.
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work in July as an enterprise-focused agent designed to handle more ambitious workplace tasks. The product competes directly with offerings such as Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, illustrating how quickly enterprise AI has become a competitive software category.
What Enterprise Customers May Watch Next
The immediate priority for both companies is restoring normal service and determining the technical causes behind the disruptions. For investors and enterprise customers, however, the broader issue is resilience. As AI agents and cloud productivity platforms become embedded in daily operations, reliability, redundancy and incident response are becoming increasingly important alongside product capabilities.
Future outages may therefore be judged not only by their duration, but also by how effectively providers communicate, isolate problems and prevent recurrence. The growing dependence on a small number of major technology platforms could make service reliability an increasingly important consideration for businesses evaluating enterprise AI adoption.
