Key Points
- Quarterly Earnings Beat Estimates: GM generated $50.0 billion in revenue and adjusted EPS of $3.70, both above analyst expectations.
- Cash Flow Forecast Rises: Adjusted automotive free cash flow guidance increased to 11.5billion–12.5 billion, while adjusted EBIT and EPS ranges narrowed without changes to their midpoints.
- Vehicle Mix Remains Uneven: US sales declined 5.5% as EV sales fell approximately 62%, while light-duty pickup sales increased 9.3%.
GM Delivers Stronger-Than-Expected Quarterly Earnings
General Motors reported third-quarter results ahead of analyst expectations, supported by higher revenue and stronger adjusted operating earnings. Revenue reached $50.0 billion, a 2.9% increase from the previous year and above the Bloomberg consensus estimate of $48.52 billion.
Adjusted earnings per share came in at $3.70, compared with expectations of $3.57. Adjusted earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, totaled $4.1 billion, exceeding the $4.02 billion estimate and increasing nearly 22% year over year.
Despite the stronger quarterly performance, investors reacted negatively to the company’s updated full-year outlook. GM shares fell more than 5% in early trading, suggesting that the market had expected a more substantial improvement in guidance.
Full-Year Guidance Narrows as Cash Flow Outlook Improves
GM narrowed its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to 14.5billion–15.5 billion, compared with the previous range of 14billion–16 billion. Adjusted EPS guidance was revised to 12.75–13.75, from 12–14.
Both ranges retain their previous midpoints of $15 billion for adjusted EBIT and $13.25 for adjusted EPS. The revisions reduce the potential upside while also narrowing the downside, rather than increasing the central earnings outlook.
The company also raised its adjusted automotive free cash flow forecast to 11.5billion–12.5 billion, up from 9.5billion–11.5 billion. This represents an improvement in expected cash generation and provides additional financial capacity for capital allocation.
$20 Billion Buyback Signals Shareholder Return Commitment
GM’s board approved a new $20 billion multiyear share repurchase authorization with no expiration date. The company also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.18 per share.
Chief Executive Mary Barra described the buyback as part of GM’s established capital-return strategy, emphasizing the board’s commitment to creating shareholder value.
The authorization gives GM additional flexibility to repurchase shares over time. However, the pace and ultimate scale of purchases will depend on execution and capital allocation decisions rather than the authorization alone.
Inflation and Regulatory Costs Remain Pressures
GM expects commodity inflation of approximately $2 billion, at the upper end of its previous 1.5billion–2 billion range. The company cited logistics expenses and memory chip, or DRAM, costs among the factors contributing to higher costs.
Expected regulatory benefits were reduced to approximately $500 million from as much as $750 million. Partially offsetting these pressures, gross tariff costs are tracking toward the lower end of GM’s estimated 2.5billion–3.5 billion range.
Barra said the company was working to maintain its momentum despite growing inflationary pressures. The updated estimates highlight the importance of cost management and operating execution in preserving profitability.
EV Weakness Contrasts With Pickup Strength
GM’s third-quarter US vehicle sales totaled 670,974 units, down 5.5% from a year earlier. A sharp decline in electric vehicle sales offset gains in pickups and smaller SUVs.
Based on the company’s model-level figures, EV sales fell approximately 62% to around 25,500 units, representing less than 4% of US volume, compared with more than 9% a year earlier. Excluding EVs, sales were essentially flat, increasing 0.3%.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV recorded a 92.4% decline to 1,905 units, while sales of the Blazer EV fell 84.4%. The GMC Hummer EV declined 72.9%, and the Cadillac Lyriq dropped 50.5%.
Gas-powered pickups provided a partial offset. Light-duty pickup sales increased 9.3%, including a 13.3% rise in Chevrolet Silverado light-duty sales to 100,221 units. GMC Sierra light-duty sales gained 2.9%. Heavy-duty models were weaker, with Silverado HD sales down 10.1% and Sierra HD sales declining 6.9%.
GM said it remained on track to lead the full-size pickup segment for a seventh consecutive year.
What Investors Should Watch Next
GM’s outlook will depend on its ability to manage inflation, contain tariff expenses, and sustain profitability amid diverging trends across its vehicle lineup. The higher free cash flow forecast and new buyback authorization offer support for its shareholder-return strategy, but they do not eliminate operating risks.
Investors will also monitor whether EV demand stabilizes and whether pickup strength can offset weakness elsewhere. The central question is whether GM can translate stronger quarterly earnings and improved cash flow expectations into sustained financial performance while navigating cost pressures and changes in vehicle demand.
