- Spot gold fell 0.3% to $4,128.92 per ounce as higher oil prices heightened concerns that inflation could remain persistent.
- Investors are awaiting the October 27–28 policy meeting for guidance on interest rates, while markets continue to price in the possibility of a December rate hike.
- Silver and platinum advanced, while palladium declined, reflecting divergent price movements across the precious metals market.
Gold Weakens as Oil Prices Rise
Gold prices edged lower on Tuesday as rising energy costs renewed concerns about inflation and the potential implications for U.S. monetary policy. Spot gold declined 0.3% to $4,128.92 per ounce by 0621 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery fell 0.3% to $4,148.50.
The decline followed an increase in oil prices, with Brent crude trading near a five-month high. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East contributed to the rise after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group said it had carried out attacks against Saudi energy, airport, and military targets.
Higher oil prices can increase inflationary pressure by raising energy and transportation costs. This may complicate central banks’ efforts to bring inflation under control and influence expectations for future interest rate decisions.
Gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. However, the prospect of higher interest rates can weigh on the metal because it does not pay interest, making interest-bearing assets comparatively more attractive.
Federal Reserve Outlook Shapes Investor Sentiment
Investors are looking to the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting for further indications of the U.S. interest rate trajectory. Recent comments from Fed officials suggesting limited urgency for additional policy tightening have tempered expectations of a rate increase at the upcoming meeting.
However, market pricing continued to indicate a substantial likelihood of further tightening later in the year. According to the CME FedWatch Tool cited in the source report, traders assigned a 92% probability to a rate hike in December.
Market participants are therefore balancing two competing forces: persistent inflation risks linked to energy prices and the possibility that the Federal Reserve may maintain its current policy stance in the near term.
An unchanged rate decision could provide short-term support for gold if it reduces expectations for tighter monetary conditions. Conversely, signals that policymakers remain concerned about inflation could reinforce expectations of higher rates and place additional pressure on the metal.
Bank of Japan Signals Continued Policy Considerations
Monetary policy developments in Japan also remain relevant to global financial markets. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said underlying inflation was approaching the central bank’s 2% target.
Ueda also pointed to strong global demand related to artificial intelligence as an additional source of inflationary pressure, alongside a tight labor market. His remarks indicated that further interest rate increases remain a possibility for the Bank of Japan.
Differences in the monetary policy outlooks of major central banks may influence currency markets, bond yields, and investor demand for non-yielding assets such as gold.
Silver and Platinum Advance as Palladium Declines
Other precious metals recorded mixed movements during Tuesday’s session. Spot silver rose 0.5% to $57.38 per ounce, while platinum gained 0.4% to $1,647.05. Palladium moved lower, declining 0.5% to $1,114.50.
The contrasting performance indicates that price movements were not uniform across the precious metals complex. Gold remained particularly sensitive to the interaction between energy-driven inflation concerns and expectations for U.S. monetary policy.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The Federal Reserve’s October meeting will be a key near-term event for gold markets, particularly for signals on inflation, future policy decisions, and the possibility of further tightening in December. Developments in the Middle East and the direction of oil prices will also remain important, as renewed energy market pressure could influence expectations for interest rates.
For investors, the central consideration is whether inflation concerns will translate into a more restrictive monetary policy outlook. A less aggressive stance from the Federal Reserve could support gold, while persistent inflation and higher expected interest rates could continue to weigh on prices.
