Key Points
- Spot gold fell 0.3% to $4,126.84 per ounce on Tuesday, while U.S. gold futures declined 0.3% to $4,146.00.
- Markets are preparing for the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting, with inflation data and the possibility of another rate increase in December shaping expectations.
- Higher interest rates could weigh on gold by increasing the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset, while geopolitical uncertainty may continue to support safe-haven demand.
Gold prices edged lower in early Asian trading on October 20 as investors reassessed the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook ahead of its next interest-rate decision. The decline reflects a broader market debate over persistent inflation, borrowing costs and the potential for further monetary tightening, factors that influence both precious metals and global bond markets. With the Fed’s next meeting approaching, investors are also watching upcoming U.S. inflation data for clues about the direction of interest rates into year-end.
Gold Retreats as Investors Position for the Fed Meeting
Spot gold declined 0.3% to $4,126.84 per ounce by 0102 GMT on Tuesday, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery fell 0.3% to $4,146.00. The modest pullback followed a period of shifting expectations about the Fed’s next move, as traders weighed inflation risks against the possibility that policymakers could leave rates unchanged in October.
At its September meeting, the U.S. central bank raised its benchmark overnight interest-rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00%. According to market pricing cited through the CME FedWatch Tool, traders assigned an 83% probability to rates remaining largely unchanged at the October 27–28 meeting. Expectations for a rate increase in December remained elevated at 94%, highlighting concerns that inflation could require further policy tightening before the end of the year.
Inflation Data and Bond Yields Remain Critical Drivers
Investors are turning their attention to the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, due next week. The measure is closely monitored by the Fed as it works toward its 2% inflation target. A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce expectations for higher interest rates, while signs of easing price pressures could reduce the need for additional tightening.
Gold is particularly sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations because it does not generate interest income. When yields on government bonds and other interest-bearing assets rise, the opportunity cost of holding bullion increases. A stronger U.S. dollar can also pressure gold by making dollar-denominated prices more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Conversely, falling yields or a weaker dollar can provide support by improving gold’s relative appeal.
Geopolitical Risks Complicate the Outlook for Precious Metals
Monetary policy is not the only influence on gold. Persistent geopolitical tensions continue to underpin demand for assets perceived as stores of value during periods of uncertainty. Reports of attacks claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement against Saudi targets have added to the geopolitical backdrop, potentially limiting the downside for bullion even as interest-rate concerns weigh on prices.
Other precious metals also weakened in early trading on Tuesday. Spot silver fell 0.7%, palladium declined 0.7%, and platinum was unchanged, reflecting mixed conditions across the broader metals market.
Looking ahead, gold’s direction will depend on the balance between inflation data, Fed guidance, Treasury yields, dollar movements and geopolitical developments. A more persistent inflation outlook could strengthen expectations for further rate increases and put additional pressure on bullion. By contrast, softer inflation or a deterioration in the global risk environment could renew demand for gold. The October Fed meeting and the subsequent flow of economic data are likely to remain central to determining whether the metal stabilizes or extends its recent weakness.
