Key Points

  • Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,180.97 an ounce on Monday after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks reduced expectations for an October interest rate hike.
  • Traders lowered the implied probability of a quarter-point rate increase to below 20%, supporting gold by reducing concerns about higher borrowing costs.
  • Persistent inflation, elevated oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty continue to create competing pressures for bullion, which remains around 20% below its level when the US-Iran conflict began in late February.

Gold prices edged higher at the start of the week as investors reassessed the likelihood of another Federal Reserve interest rate increase in October following comments by Chair Kevin Warsh. The shift in expectations offered some relief to bullion after a 0.7% decline the previous week, although persistent inflation and uncertainty over the global economic outlook continue to complicate the outlook for precious metals. With the Fed’s next policy decision approaching, markets are weighing the prospect of higher borrowing costs against gold’s appeal as a store of value during periods of geopolitical instability.

Warsh’s Remarks Shift Expectations for Federal Reserve Policy

Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,180.97 an ounce at 7:35 a.m. in Singapore on Monday, while silver gained 0.6% to $57.33 an ounce. Platinum and palladium also advanced. Gold had come under pressure after stronger-than-expected US inflation data encouraged traders to consider the possibility of another rate increase, helping support the dollar.

Warsh’s subsequent remarks were interpreted as reducing the likelihood of an immediate move. Traders cut the implied probability of a quarter-point rate hike to below 20%, suggesting that markets increasingly expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged at its upcoming meeting. The change matters for gold because the metal does not generate interest income. When investors expect interest rates to rise, interest-bearing assets become relatively more attractive, increasing the opportunity cost of holding bullion.

Inflation and Oil Prices Remain Key Market Risks

The shift in rate expectations does not eliminate the inflation risks facing the US economy. Recent price data have renewed concerns that inflation could remain elevated, potentially forcing policymakers to maintain restrictive monetary conditions for longer than investors anticipate. Higher oil prices add another complication by increasing energy costs and potentially feeding into broader inflation measures.

Gold’s response to these forces is not always straightforward. Expectations of higher rates and a stronger dollar can weigh on bullion, while geopolitical uncertainty and concerns about economic stability can increase demand for assets perceived as stores of value. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed on Monday after declining 0.3% the previous week, leaving currency movements as another factor for traders to monitor.

Geopolitical Uncertainty Continues to Shape Gold Demand

Gold has remained above the $4,000-an-ounce threshold since August, supported in part by its safe-haven appeal. Nevertheless, the metal remains around 20% below its level when the US-Iran conflict erupted in late February, illustrating how quickly changes in interest-rate expectations and market positioning can offset demand for protection against geopolitical risk.

Investors will now focus on the Fed’s upcoming policy meeting, fresh inflation indicators and further comments from policymakers. If the central bank signals that rates are likely to remain unchanged, gold could receive additional support from reduced pressure on non-yielding assets. However, renewed inflation surprises, rising Treasury yields or a stronger dollar could reverse recent gains. The interaction between monetary policy expectations, energy prices and geopolitical developments is likely to remain central to gold’s near-term direction.
