Gold held near $4,150 an ounce on Friday after recording its strongest daily advance in more than two weeks, as investors moved toward defensive assets amid pressure on technology shares and falling U.S. bond yields. The rebound highlights the competing forces shaping the precious metals market: persistent inflation risks and expectations for tighter monetary policy on one side, and safe-haven demand and lower yields on the other.

Falling Yields Restore Some Appeal to Gold

Gold advanced on Thursday as a retreat in Treasury yields and a weaker U.S. dollar helped offset concerns about rising inflation. Spot prices climbed to around $4,153–$4,160 per ounce during the session, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery settled 1.5% higher at $4,170.10. The gains followed three consecutive sessions of losses.

Treasury yields declined sharply as investors sought protection in government bonds, with yields falling by as much as 12–15 basis points across the curve. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reached a three-week low. Lower yields generally support gold because the metal does not pay interest, reducing the relative opportunity cost of holding it rather than interest-bearing assets.

A softer dollar also makes dollar-denominated gold less expensive for buyers using other currencies, potentially supporting international demand. However, the latest rebound has not eliminated the market’s sensitivity to interest-rate expectations.

Technology Volatility Fuels Defensive Positioning

The shift toward defensive assets has been linked to growing concerns about the sustainability of investment in artificial intelligence and the outlook for technology companies. A selloff in chipmakers and broader uncertainty surrounding AI-related spending prompted investors to reassess risk exposure and seek alternatives to equities.

That rotation supported both government bonds and gold, although the two assets respond to different market forces. Bonds benefit directly when yields decline, while gold can gain from a combination of lower real yields, currency movements and demand for protection against economic or geopolitical uncertainty.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have added another source of uncertainty. Nevertheless, safe-haven demand does not guarantee a sustained rise in gold: if investors return to riskier assets or the dollar strengthens again, some of the recent support could fade.

Inflation and the Federal Reserve Remain Key Risks

The outlook for monetary policy remains complicated by stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data for September. Rising consumer prices, driven in part by energy costs, initially increased expectations of another Federal Reserve rate increase and weighed on gold.

Subsequent declines in yields and the dollar helped the metal recover. Markets have continued to assess whether the inflation rebound will force policymakers to maintain restrictive conditions for longer or whether financial-market volatility will argue for a more cautious approach. Expectations for an immediate October rate increase remain limited, but the possibility of tighter policy later in the year remains a risk.

Investors will now focus on Kevin Warsh’s remarks at an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok for clues about the Fed’s next steps. Further movements in Treasury yields, the dollar and technology shares will also shape trading. If yields remain subdued and demand for defensive assets persists, gold could retain support; renewed inflation concerns or a stronger dollar could put the recovery under pressure.
