Key Points
- S&P 500 fell 0.58% to 7,673.52 as software stocks came under pressure from renewed concerns about artificial intelligence disrupting established business models.
- Salesforce, Intuit and ServiceNow declined sharply, while the S&P 500 software and services index fell 1.4% for a second consecutive session.
- The S&P 500 remains valued at roughly 19 times forward earnings, down from 21 times in early June, while rising oil prices and changing Federal Reserve expectations add further market uncertainty.
U.S. equities ended lower on September 8 as renewed concerns about AI-driven disruption in the software industry combined with rising oil prices and uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy. The S&P 500 declined despite stronger earnings expectations, highlighting how investors are increasingly distinguishing between companies positioned to benefit from artificial intelligence investment and businesses whose existing revenue models could face technological pressure.
Software Stocks Lead the Market’s Decline
The S&P 500 fell 0.58% to 7,673.52, while the Nasdaq declined 0.32% to 26,421.41 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.18% to 52,786.07. The weakness was particularly pronounced among software companies, with Salesforce and Intuit each losing about 4%, while ServiceNow fell 5%.
The S&P 500 software and services index declined 1.4% for a second consecutive session. The pressure followed the launch of OpenAI’s latest GPT-6 Astra model, which has renewed speculation that increasingly capable AI systems could compete with specialized software products and services.
The market reaction reflects a broader reassessment of technology valuations. AI investment has supported semiconductor manufacturers and data-center infrastructure companies, but investors are increasingly questioning whether software companies can maintain pricing power and competitive advantages as AI capabilities expand.
AI Creates Winners and Losers Across Technology
The divergence within technology stocks was particularly visible during the session. Intel gained 9% and Qualcomm rose 3.2% after announcing an agreement with Amazon to develop customized AI chips. The gains contrast sharply with the declines among software companies, reinforcing the increasingly important distinction between companies supplying AI infrastructure and those whose business models could face disruption from the technology.
This divergence could become an important feature of equity-market leadership. Semiconductor and data-center companies may continue to benefit from heavy AI-related capital expenditure, while software businesses face greater scrutiny over whether AI enhances their products or ultimately reduces demand for existing services.
Valuations Ease as Inflation and Oil Add Pressure
The S&P 500’s valuation has moderated from earlier levels. LSEG data cited by Reuters showed the benchmark trading at approximately 19 times expected earnings, compared with 21 times in early June. The decline in the forward multiple has occurred alongside stronger earnings expectations following a solid second-quarter reporting season, suggesting that valuation compression has partly reflected improved earnings estimates rather than simply weaker corporate fundamentals.
At the same time, geopolitical developments are creating another source of pressure. Oil prices reached a six-week high as the Middle East conflict intensified, while slower traffic through the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns about energy supply. The S&P 500 energy sector gained 1%, partially offsetting broader market weakness.
Investors now face several competing catalysts, with U.S. consumer and producer inflation data likely to be decisive for Federal Reserve expectations. Markets are pricing roughly a 60% probability of a September rate increase after stronger-than-expected employment data. Going forward, the key questions will be whether inflation continues to cool, whether higher oil prices create renewed price pressures and whether AI disruption fears spread beyond software. The S&P 500’s lower forward valuation provides some cushion, but persistent geopolitical risks, elevated Treasury yields and increasingly selective technology leadership could keep market breadth under pressure.
