Reddit is entering a strategically important phase in its relationship with Google as artificial intelligence reshapes how consumers discover information online. CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit is seeing several hundred thousand new app downloads each day that are not attributed to Google or paid acquisition, while users generated roughly 1 billion new posts and comments during the latest quarter, strengthening the platform’s position as a source of human-generated information.

Reddit Is Building a Larger Direct User Base

Huffman told investors at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference that Reddit sees a few hundred thousand unattributed new app downloads daily. These downloads are not referred by Google and are not generated through paid acquisition, making them strategically different from transient search traffic.

The distinction matters because Reddit increasingly wants users to become part of its direct ecosystem rather than simply arriving through a search engine, viewing a page and leaving. Huffman said the company’s priority is improving the new-user experience and retention, particularly through its recommendation system, feed, navigation and personalization capabilities. Reddit believes that converting more of these users into recurring app users can expand engagement and, ultimately, the advertising impressions that underpin its business.

One Billion New Posts Reinforce Reddit’s Content Advantage

The scale of user-generated activity is another important component of Reddit’s strategy. Huffman said users created approximately 1 billion new posts and comments during the quarter, equivalent to about 4% of the platform’s entire 21-year content archive. The volume illustrates the continuing expansion of Reddit’s proprietary corpus of conversations, opinions, recommendations and niche expertise.

This content has become increasingly valuable as AI-generated material expands across the internet. Search engines and AI systems require large quantities of fresh, human-generated information to answer questions, evaluate opinions and provide context. Reddit therefore occupies an unusual position: it is both a destination that wants users to engage directly and a large source of information that external search and AI systems want to access.

Google and Reddit Have Different Incentives in AI Search

The relationship with Google has become more complicated as search evolves from a list of links toward AI-generated answers. Reddit’s management has emphasized that users who arrive through search are not necessarily as valuable as users who directly engage with the platform, while Google has an incentive to use Reddit’s content to make its search results more useful.

Huffman has also argued that many users already search for Reddit by name, meaning Google is sometimes functioning as a navigation layer rather than the ultimate destination. Reddit’s objective is increasingly to convert those users into direct participants in its ecosystem. At the same time, the two companies are engaged in discussions over their broader commercial relationship, including the economics surrounding Reddit’s content and its role in Google’s search and AI products.

The financial stakes are meaningful. Reddit reported $805 million of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 61% year over year, with advertising revenue rising 64% to $762 million. Daily active unique users increased 18% to 130.3 million, while international DAUq grew 28%. These results show that Reddit’s core advertising business is expanding rapidly even as the company navigates uncertainty around search-driven traffic.

AI Search Could Change the Economics of Internet Traffic

The Reddit-Google negotiations are part of a broader structural shift affecting publishers, platforms and search engines globally. Traditional search monetization depends on sending users from a search page to an external website, while AI search increasingly attempts to provide the answer directly within the search interface. That creates a potential conflict between content owners seeking traffic and search platforms seeking to retain users.

Google has already faced growing scrutiny over this model. European regulators are examining Google’s AI search practices and its newly introduced ability for publishers to opt out of having content used in AI-generated summaries without losing traditional search rankings. The issue highlights the wider economic question of how content creators can participate in the value generated when their material is used by AI systems.

For Reddit, the strategic objective is therefore not simply to maximize Google referrals. It is to increase the number of users who remain inside the Reddit ecosystem while simultaneously ensuring that the company’s extensive archive of human-generated content retains commercial value. Going forward, investors will be watching U.S. user growth, app retention, direct traffic, advertising monetization and the outcome of negotiations with Google. If Reddit can convert more search-driven discovery into direct engagement while preserving the economic value of its content, its bargaining position in the evolving AI-search ecosystem could strengthen; if search engines increasingly answer questions without sending users to Reddit, the platform will face a more difficult trade-off between reach and monetization.
