Key Points

  • SAP’s new platform is designed to let customers build AI agents with different large language models and access a richer context layer.
  • Second-quarter cloud sales grew 22%, but concerns about slowing future growth have contributed to a 13% year-to-date decline in the shares.
  • The decisive test will be whether AI adoption produces meaningful financial results over the next 12 months.

SAP Bets on a New AI Platform to Change the Narrative

SAP is attempting to reset investor expectations around its artificial-intelligence strategy as Chief Executive Officer Christian Klein argues that the company is approaching a critical inflection point. The enterprise software giant is preparing to make its new platform generally available in the fall, allowing customers to build AI agents using different large language models while accessing a broader contextual data layer.

For SAP, the timing is important. The company has been under pressure to demonstrate that its transition toward cloud-based software can translate into a credible AI growth story. Klein has taken direct control of the AI strategy, reflecting the importance management places on converting technological development into measurable commercial results.

Strong Cloud Growth Has Not Convinced the Market

SAP’s recent financial performance provides a stronger foundation than its share price might suggest. Second-quarter sales increased 9% year over year to €9.88 billion, while cloud revenue climbed 22%. Earnings also exceeded analyst expectations, and the company reported a 27% increase in cloud backlog.

Yet those figures have not eliminated concerns surrounding the company’s longer-term growth trajectory. SAP modestly reduced its full-year 2026 main operating profit guidance, attributing the adjustment to several acquisitions. More importantly, investors remain focused on whether the company can sustain accelerating demand as its cloud business becomes significantly larger.

The market reaction has been notably cautious. SAP shares are down 13% year to date, while the S&P 500 has gained 12%. The divergence indicates that investors are looking beyond current financial strength and demanding evidence that SAP’s next stage of growth can justify its position in an increasingly competitive software market.

AI Competition Raises the Bar for SAP

JPMorgan analyst Toby Ogg has highlighted the difficulty of achieving renewed momentum from an already substantial cloud customer base. Following years of customer migrations, SAP must now demonstrate that its backlog can accelerate rather than simply expand from a larger existing foundation.

This challenge is amplified by the emergence of new enterprise software providers and established competitors rapidly adapting their products for the AI era. SAP therefore faces a strategic test: its AI offering must be sufficiently differentiated to generate new demand while also strengthening the economics of its existing software ecosystem.

The Next 12 Months Could Define the AI Investment Case

Management appears increasingly aware that technology announcements alone will not satisfy investors. Klein has pointed to customer testing and early proof points as evidence that the new platform is gaining traction, but the ultimate benchmark will be financial performance.

That makes the coming year particularly important. If customers adopt SAP’s AI platform at scale and the technology begins contributing meaningfully to revenue and profitability, the company could challenge the prevailing bearish narrative. If adoption remains limited or cloud growth continues to decelerate, investors may become even less willing to assign a premium to SAP in a software market increasingly shaped by AI.

For investors in the U.S. and Israel, SAP offers a broader lesson about the AI transition: established software companies are no longer being judged solely on whether they have AI products, but on whether those products create measurable economic value. The next 12 months should provide a clearer indication of whether SAP’s promised breakthrough is technological — or genuinely financial.
