Key Points
- Marvell expects revenue to rise from $9.5 billion on a trailing basis to roughly $18 billion in fiscal 2028, while gross margin remains around 57.5%-58.5%.
- Custom silicon is expected to more than double in fiscal 2028, creating significant growth but also contributing to margin pressure.
- With the stock still trading at about 21.2 times trailing sales, future returns increasingly depend on sustained growth and operating leverage rather than valuation expansion.
Revenue Growth Is Accelerating While Margins Stand Still
Marvell Technology is entering a critical stage of its growth story, with management projecting substantially higher revenue while leaving its gross-margin expectations largely unchanged. The company generated $9.5 billion in revenue over the past twelve months and now expects approximately $12 billion in fiscal 2027 and $18 billion in fiscal 2028. The latest fiscal 2028 outlook represents roughly 50% growth, an increase from the previous expectation of about 45%.
Yet the profitability profile at the gross level is not expanding alongside revenue. Management expects non-GAAP gross margin to remain between 57.5% and 58.5% in fiscal Q3 and Q4 2027, with the preliminary fiscal 2028 view also positioned within that range. Compared with the 58.9% trailing level, that implies that Marvell’s growth is increasingly dependent on selling substantially more products rather than retaining a larger percentage of each dollar generated.
Custom Silicon Is Both the Growth Engine and the Margin Challenge
The central issue is the composition of Marvell’s growth. Data center represented 79% of fiscal Q2 2027 revenue, while management expects its custom business, including XPU and XPU attach products, to more than double in fiscal 2028 and accelerate again in fiscal 2029.
That expansion provides a powerful structural opportunity as demand for customized computing infrastructure grows. However, management has also linked the sequential gross-margin pressure in fiscal Q3 to the accelerating custom-silicon ramp. Optical DSPs, switching and broadband analog products are also expected to contribute to growth, but product mix remains the key variable affecting gross profitability.
This creates an unusual dynamic: the faster Marvell’s highest-growth businesses expand, the greater their potential influence on overall margins. Investors therefore need to evaluate not only how quickly revenue is growing, but what type of revenue is driving that growth.
Operating Leverage Offers a Second Path to Higher Profits
Marvell’s profitability story is not entirely dependent on gross-margin expansion. Non-GAAP operating margin reached 36.6% in fiscal Q2 2027, improving 180 basis points from a year earlier. Management expects operating margins to enter its 38%-40% long-term target range in fiscal Q4 2027 and potentially reach the upper end during fiscal 2028.
The improvement is expected to come partly from operating expenses growing at roughly half the rate of revenue in fiscal 2028. This operating leverage could allow earnings to expand even if gross margins remain broadly flat, providing investors with another mechanism for capturing the company’s rapid top-line growth.
Does Marvell’s Valuation Already Reflect the Opportunity?
The stock’s performance underscores the expectations embedded in the valuation. Marvell has gained 249.5% over the past twelve months, although it has declined 22.6% over the last three months. At approximately 21.2 times trailing sales, the company is valued near the top decile of its own decade-long range.
That valuation leaves relatively little room for disappointment. The key questions ahead are whether fiscal Q3 gross margin can exceed the current guidance range and whether management’s October investor-day outlook raises the longer-term margin opportunity. If revenue continues accelerating while operating leverage strengthens, the valuation may prove supportable. If growth slows without meaningful margin expansion, investors could instead view the recent decline as a broader repricing of expectations.
