Key Points

  • Brent crude rose 0.78% to $109.64 a barrel, while U.S. WTI gained 0.78% to $98.58 in early Wednesday trading.
  • Attacks on vessels, risks near the Strait of Hormuz and threats to Saudi energy infrastructure are sustaining concerns over oil supply.
  • Higher crude prices could intensify inflation pressures, complicate central-bank decisions and increase energy costs for import-dependent economies, including Israel.

Oil prices edged higher on Wednesday, October 21, as renewed security risks across the Middle East kept traders focused on the possibility of further supply disruptions. Brent futures rose 85 cents to $109.64 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 76 cents to $98.58 as of 0022 GMT, reflecting a market in which geopolitical uncertainty is adding to concerns about already constrained energy flows.

Shipping Threats Sustain the Geopolitical Risk Premium

The latest gains followed reports of a supertanker catching fire after striking a sea mine south of the Strait of Hormuz. The incident added to concerns about the security of commercial shipping routes, with at least 18 vessel attacks reported over a two-week period. The risks are no longer confined to the Strait of Hormuz, as threats to shipping have extended toward the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea.

These developments matter because oil prices depend not only on current production but also on the reliability of transportation and export infrastructure. Even when crude continues to reach buyers, heightened security risks can raise insurance premiums, freight rates and delivery costs. Threats to Saudi energy infrastructure add another layer of uncertainty because the kingdom is a major supplier to international markets.

For traders, the distinction between a potential disruption and a confirmed loss of supply remains critical. Prices can rise as buyers seek to hedge against future shortages, even before physical shipments decline materially.

Inventory Data and Tight Supply Add to Market Sensitivity

Oil also received support from industry data indicating a substantial drawdown in U.S. crude inventories. A decline in stockpiles can signal stronger refinery demand, reduced imports or lower domestic supply, although the significance depends on the size of the draw and changes in fuel inventories and refinery activity.

The combination of inventory pressure and geopolitical risk makes prices particularly sensitive to new developments. If shipping disruptions reduce export volumes or delay deliveries, refiners may need to compete more aggressively for available crude. Conversely, evidence that shipments are continuing and inventories are rebuilding could limit further gains.

The gap between Brent and WTI also remains relevant. Brent reflects conditions in the international seaborne market, while WTI is more directly influenced by U.S. supply and distribution. Differences between the benchmarks can therefore reveal how regional disruptions and transportation constraints are affecting buyers.

Inflation Risks Put Energy Markets Back in Focus

Sustained oil prices near $110 a barrel would increase pressure on fuel, transportation and production costs. For major economies, higher energy prices could slow progress on inflation and make interest-rate decisions more difficult. The impact would depend on how long crude remains elevated and whether businesses pass higher costs on to consumers.

Israel is particularly exposed to imported energy costs, making developments in global oil markets relevant to domestic inflation, transport expenses and the broader cost of living. Currency movements and domestic fuel pricing mechanisms would also influence how quickly international price changes reach consumers.

Markets will now watch for evidence of actual supply losses, further attacks on shipping, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and Saudi export infrastructure, as well as fresh U.S. inventory data. Any sustained diplomatic progress could ease the risk premium, while a measurable decline in exports would increase the likelihood of further price volatility.
