Brent Extends Its Rally on Geopolitical Concerns

Oil prices rose on Friday as renewed attacks involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement heightened concerns about energy supply security. Brent crude futures gained 79 cents, or 0.7%, to $113.96 per barrel by 0810 GMT, after reaching $114.72, the highest level since May 4. WTI advanced $1.10, or 1.1%, to $100.57.

Brent was on track for a third consecutive weekly gain of nearly 4%, while WTI was poised to finish the week down 0.8%, illustrating divergent performance between the two benchmarks despite renewed upward pressure during Friday’s session.

The market’s focus remains on the possibility that escalating regional hostilities could disrupt production, exports or shipping. Saudi Arabia’s position as the world’s largest crude exporter makes threats to its energy infrastructure particularly significant for global supply expectations.

Saudi Aramco Evacuation Raises Supply Concerns

Saudi Aramco reportedly ordered the evacuation of its headquarters in Dhahran on Thursday as fighting intensified between Saudi Arabia and Yemen-based Houthi forces.

The conflict has included Houthi advances toward Bab el-Mandeb, a strategic shipping chokepoint at the entrance to the Red Sea. Disruption around key maritime routes can complicate energy deliveries, increase freight costs and place additional pressure on an already constrained market.

UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said volatile oil flows and elevated freight rates had left the market undersupplied, adding that further escalation could trigger renewed supply disruptions.

XS.com analyst Linh Tran emphasized that the scale of actual disruption and the time required to restore operations would determine the supply risk premium investors were willing to accept. Persistent attacks that delay deliveries could provide a firmer basis for elevated prices.

Libyan Pipeline Shutdown Adds to Supply Pressure

Supply concerns have also emerged in North Africa. Libya’s National Oil Corporation reported that a pipeline valve connecting the Hamada and Tahara oil fields to the Zawiya port had been shut, reducing production at both fields.

The duration of the shutdown and the extent of the resulting production losses will influence its effect on the wider market. Combined with uncertainty surrounding Saudi infrastructure and maritime routes, the Libyan disruption adds another variable to the global supply outlook.

For oil traders, the distinction between temporary operational interruptions and sustained losses remains important when assessing whether current price levels can be maintained.

Russian Diesel Shipment Highlights US Fuel Supply Efforts

Developments in refined fuel markets are also drawing attention. LSEG data showed that a Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel was heading toward New York on Friday.

Russia had agreed to lift a self-imposed ban on diesel exports and supply fuel to global markets, including the United States, following an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The initiative aims to help reduce fuel prices.

The shipment highlights efforts to improve diesel availability even as geopolitical tensions continue to threaten energy infrastructure and transport routes. Crude oil and refined fuel markets may respond differently depending on the location, duration and type of supply disruption.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Oil prices will remain sensitive to further attacks on Saudi infrastructure, developments around Bab el-Mandeb and evidence of sustained interruptions to regional exports. The duration of Libya’s pipeline shutdown and changes in freight rates will also help determine the extent of supply pressure.

Investors will additionally monitor whether increased Russian diesel exports improve US fuel availability. Ultimately, the sustainability of the current oil rally will depend on the scale of confirmed supply losses and the time required to restore normal operations.
