Key Points
- Brent Above $110: The benchmark rose to $110.51 per barrel on October 21, 2026, gaining 1.58% from the previous day.
- Strong Price Momentum: Brent advanced 11.34% over the past month and 76.56% year over year amid persistent supply concerns.
- Diplomacy Remains Critical: Negotiations between the United States and Iran continue, but uncertainty over a potential agreement and attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz remain key market risks.
Brent Prices Rebound Amid Diplomatic Uncertainty
Brent crude rose above $110 per barrel on Wednesday as investors assessed conflicting signals about diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the United States and Iran.
The benchmark advanced to $110.51 per barrel, up 1.58% from the previous session. The recovery followed a sharp decline on Tuesday, when reports of diplomatic activity raised expectations that an agreement could be approaching.
Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met with senior Iranian diplomatic and military officials in Tehran to discuss bilateral relations and the status of negotiations with Washington. However, a diplomat involved in the discussions dismissed reports that a deal was imminent, while confirming that efforts to end the conflict were continuing.
The mixed signals have left energy markets sensitive to developments in the negotiations. The prospect of a diplomatic breakthrough could ease concerns about supply disruptions, while continued hostilities could sustain upward pressure on prices.
Regional Hostilities Increase Supply Risks
Geopolitical tensions remain a significant factor in the oil market. Intensifying hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces, alongside the Russia-Ukraine conflict, have heightened concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and transportation routes.
At least 18 vessels have come under attack in the Strait of Hormuz over the past two weeks, adding to uncertainty surrounding the movement of oil through a critical maritime corridor.
Despite these risks, oil flows from the Middle East have largely recovered to approximately 80% of prewar levels. The partial recovery indicates that some supply has resumed, although flows remain below their earlier level.
The combination of improving oil movements and persistent security concerns creates a complex outlook for prices. A further recovery in shipments could ease supply pressure, while renewed attacks or restrictions could reverse those gains.
Brent Records Significant Monthly and Annual Gains
Brent crude’s latest advance extends a substantial rally. According to Trading Economics data, the benchmark has gained 11.34% over the past month and is 76.56% higher than at the same time last year.
The price increase reflects the continued influence of geopolitical developments and supply uncertainty on the oil market. Brent’s historical record high stands at $147.50 per barrel, reached in July 2008.
Although current prices remain below that historical peak, the recent gains underline the scale of the market’s repricing amid heightened geopolitical risk.
What Energy Markets Should Watch Next
The direction of Brent crude will depend heavily on whether US-Iran negotiations produce tangible progress and whether regional hostilities continue to threaten shipping and energy infrastructure.
Investors will also be monitoring the recovery in Middle Eastern oil flows. A sustained return toward prewar levels could reduce supply concerns, while further disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could tighten the market and support prices.
For now, the combination of uncertain diplomacy and elevated geopolitical risks continues to leave oil prices vulnerable to sharp movements as new developments emerge.
