Key Points
- Brent Leads Above $110: Brent crude rose to $110.13 a barrel, while WTI reached $98.92 amid renewed concerns about Middle East supply security.
- Shipping Costs Remain Elevated: Average crude freight rates exceeded $20 per barrel, compared with $3 a year earlier, reflecting increased transportation and security expenses.
- Refined-Fuel Prices Face Pressure: Higher freight costs could weaken refinery margins, reduce output and contribute to rising prices for refined petroleum products.
Middle East Tensions Support Oil Prices
Oil prices rose on Wednesday as concerns about supply disruptions across the Middle East continued to influence energy markets. Attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz and reported strikes targeting Saudi energy facilities have heightened uncertainty over the movement of crude oil through the region.
Brent crude futures gained 1.22% to $110.13 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude advanced 1.11% to $98.92.
The latest gains reflect concerns that further disruptions could restrict supply flows and increase the cost of transporting oil. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point for traders assessing regional security risks and their potential consequences for global energy markets.
Strait of Hormuz Incidents Increase Shipping Concerns
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Tuesday that naval mines had prevented three tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz using routes it considered unauthorized. In a statement published on its Sepah News website, the organization said two tankers had been set ablaze and halted following mine explosions.
The reported incidents add to concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in a strategically important energy corridor. Disruptions to tanker movements can affect both the availability of crude supplies and the cost of delivering oil to international markets.
Separately, Yemen’s Houthi militants claimed responsibility on Monday for strikes targeting Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu, the Shaybah oilfield and airports in Riyadh and Abha.
The developments have increased uncertainty surrounding regional energy infrastructure and shipping routes, contributing to upward pressure on oil prices.
Crude Shipping Costs Rise Sharply
The impact of regional tensions extends beyond crude prices to the cost of transporting oil. According to a Goldman Sachs report published Tuesday, the global average crude freight rate has risen above $20 per barrel, compared with approximately $3 a year earlier.
Although freight rates have eased slightly in recent days, they remain roughly seven times higher than their year-earlier level.
Goldman Sachs estimated that war-risk premiums associated with crossing the Strait of Hormuz accounted for approximately $7 of the $20 year-on-year increase in average crude freight rates. Ship-to-ship transfers outside the Persian Gulf contributed another $4.
These additional costs reflect the growing financial burden associated with transporting crude amid elevated security risks. Even if benchmark oil prices stabilize, persistently high freight rates could continue to affect the economics of global energy trade.
Refiners Face Margin and Fuel-Price Risks
Higher transportation costs can have consequences throughout the oil supply chain. Goldman Sachs warned that elevated freight rates could widen price differences between crude grades, reduce refiners’ profit margins and eventually raise refined fuel prices.
Asian refineries may face particular pressure as higher shipping expenses weigh on net margins. If weaker profitability leads refiners to reduce refined-product output, the resulting supply constraints could contribute to higher prices for fuels in international markets.
The combination of crude supply uncertainty and elevated transportation costs therefore creates risks beyond the immediate movement of oil futures.
What Energy Markets Should Watch Next
Oil prices are likely to remain sensitive to developments affecting tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz, the security of Saudi energy infrastructure and the cost of maritime insurance and transportation.
Investors will also be watching whether crude freight rates continue to ease or remain elevated. A sustained increase in shipping costs could keep pressure on refiners even if crude benchmarks retreat from current levels.
The broader market outlook will depend on how regional security developments translate into actual supply disruptions, transportation constraints and changes in refined-fuel availability.
