Key Points

  • Walmart says income, purchase history, shopping behavior and willingness to pay will not be used to determine individualized prices.
  • About 2,300 Walmart U.S. stores were already using digital shelf labels as of March 2026, with the retailer planning to complete the rollout across its network within about a year.

Walmart is expanding the use of digital shelf labels across its U.S. stores while emphasizing that the technology is not intended to tailor prices to individual shoppers. The clarification comes as personalized pricing, consumer-data usage and artificial intelligence become increasingly important issues for the U.S. retail industry.

Walmart Separates Digital Pricing From Personalized Prices

Walmart CEO John Furner has said the company does not use personal information such as income, purchase history or an assessment of a shopper’s willingness to pay to determine the price displayed to that customer, and does not intend to do so. The retailer also says it does not set different prices based on a shopper’s identity or the time of day.

The digital shelf labels are primarily designed to replace paper tags and allow prices to be updated more quickly and accurately through a centralized system. Walmart says prices are set centrally, while store employees review and approve changes. The price displayed on the shelf is intended to match the price charged at checkout.

2,300 Stores Already Use the Technology

As of March 2026, about 2,300 Walmart U.S. stores were using digital shelf labels, with the company expecting to complete the rollout across its network within the following year. Walmart operates more than 10,900 stores across 19 countries and reported approximately $713 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue.

Beyond reducing the labor required to replace paper labels, the technology allows employees to update prices more quickly and improve consistency between shelf and checkout prices. Walmart also points to other operational uses, including LED lighting that helps employees locate products for restocking and fulfill online orders more efficiently.

Personalized Pricing Becomes a Regulatory Issue

Walmart’s comments come as consumers, advocacy groups and lawmakers increasingly examine whether digital pricing technologies could enable real-time individualized pricing. In August 2026, the Federal Trade Commission warned that personalized pricing based on consumer information could raise consumer-protection concerns and emphasized the importance of transparency around the use of personal data.

Walmart’s AI-powered digital assistant, Sparky, is also covered by the company’s commitment. Walmart says the system will not be used to increase prices for individual customers or hide lower-priced options that meet their needs. At the same time, the company notes that prices can still change because of factors such as purchasing costs, transportation expenses and other business considerations.

Going forward, investors will be watching the pace of Walmart’s digital shelf-label rollout, its impact on labor costs and operational accuracy, and how the retailer integrates AI and digital shopping tools without blurring the line between personalized shopping experiences and personalized pricing. Regulatory developments in the U.S. could also influence how large retailers deploy pricing technologies and manage consumer data.
