Key Points

  • McDonald’s says 84% of U.S. households with GLP-1 users already visit its restaurants, creating an opportunity to adapt its menu rather than build an entirely new customer base.
  • The company is exploring protein-focused options, including bowls, grilled chicken and egg bites, as GLP-1 users increasingly prioritize protein, portion flexibility and satiety.
  • With roughly 30 million GLP-1 users in the U.S., changing eating habits could affect quick-service restaurants while creating opportunities for chains that adjust menus without weakening their core proposition.

The rapid adoption of GLP-1 medications is beginning to reshape consumer eating habits, creating a new strategic challenge for the global restaurant industry. McDonald’s is positioning the shift as an opportunity, arguing that many households using weight-loss and diabetes medications already eat at its restaurants and could be retained through menu options that better match their evolving preferences.

McDonald’s Already Has Access to the GLP-1 Customer

At McDonald’s investor day, U.S. President Skye Anderson said approximately 10% of U.S. adults use GLP-1 medications and that 84% of households with GLP-1 users visit McDonald’s. Rather than treating the trend solely as a threat to traditional fast-food consumption, the company is examining how to give those customers more reasons to keep choosing its restaurants.

McDonald’s says GLP-1 customers tend to favor items such as Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish and Happy Meals, which offer combinations of protein and portion flexibility. Anderson said these consumers are looking for more protein and food that provides satiety without feeling excessive. That behavior is encouraging the company to examine how its existing menu can evolve around changing demand.

Protein Becomes a Strategic Menu Category

McDonald’s is exploring bowls, grilled chicken and egg bites as part of a broader effort to expand protein-focused choices across breakfast, lunch and dinner. Options under consideration include salads topped with McCrispy strips, grilled chicken and egg bites, as well as other products designed to provide greater flexibility in portion and format.

The opportunity extends beyond people taking GLP-1 medications. McDonald’s estimates that while there are roughly 30 million GLP-1 users in the U.S., nearly 60 million Americans are actively seeking more protein in their diets. That broader consumer group gives the company a potentially larger market for protein-led menu categories without requiring a complete departure from its established product portfolio.

GLP-1 Adoption Could Change Restaurant Economics

The implications extend beyond individual menu items. GLP-1 users generally consume fewer calories and may snack less, while also changing their beverage choices and reducing consumption of sugary drinks. Earlier this year, McDonald’s said it had not yet seen evidence that GLP-1 medications were having a material impact on its business, but management expected adoption to continue increasing as oral versions became more widely available.

For McDonald’s, the next phase will involve testing which products generate sustainable demand without adding unnecessary complexity to restaurant operations. The company has emphasized that new items will not appear simultaneously across every market, with local franchisees and differences in GLP-1 adoption influencing the pace of rollout. Investors will be watching comparable sales, customer behavior, protein-focused product performance and the broader impact of GLP-1 adoption on restaurant traffic and average spending. The strategic question is whether McDonald’s can turn a major shift in consumer behavior into menu innovation while preserving the operational efficiency that underpins its global business.
