An Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft overran a runway at Miami International Airport on September 6, killing at least five people and injuring five others. The accident temporarily disrupted operations at one of the United States’ major passenger and cargo hubs, highlighting the operational risks that can affect highly interconnected logistics networks supporting global e-commerce.

Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Runway

The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operating as Prime Air Flight 7598 and operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. The flight had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before attempting to land at Miami International Airport at around 2 p.m. local time.

The aircraft overran the runway after landing and struck multiple vehicles before coming to a stop. A fire broke out following the accident, while emergency crews responded with more than 60 units and approximately 200 personnel. The pilot and co-pilot were initially trapped inside the aircraft, while people in vehicles on the ground were also affected.

Authorities reported at least five fatalities and five injuries, with three of the injured people in critical condition. The victims had not been publicly identified at the time of the initial investigation. The cause of the runway overrun has not been established, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Miami Airport Disruption Highlights Logistics Exposure

The incident temporarily affected operations at Miami International Airport, forcing restrictions on runway activity and causing disruption to flights. Normal operations began returning later, but the event demonstrated how an accident at a major transportation hub can create knock-on effects across passenger travel and cargo networks.

Miami is particularly important to international trade because of its connections to Latin America, the Caribbean and other global markets. For Amazon, the airport also forms part of a broader logistics ecosystem that supports the movement of inventory through its fulfillment and delivery infrastructure.

Amazon has invested heavily in its dedicated air-cargo network, using aircraft to move products between fulfillment centers and distribution locations. A prolonged disruption at a key airport could therefore affect routing, delivery schedules and logistics costs, although the financial impact of the Miami accident cannot yet be determined.

Investigation Could Shape Future Aviation and Operating Costs

The FAA has opened an investigation, while the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to lead the broader accident investigation and determine the factors that contributed to the crash. Investigators will examine flight data, aircraft condition, crew actions, weather conditions, runway circumstances and other operational factors before drawing conclusions.

The investigation is likely to be closely watched because the Boeing 767 remains an important aircraft in the global cargo market. Any findings involving aircraft systems, operating procedures or safety practices could have implications beyond Amazon and its aviation partners if regulators determine that broader changes are necessary.

For Amazon, the immediate priority is supporting those affected and cooperating with investigators. The company’s longer-term exposure will depend on whether the accident results in changes to operating procedures, additional regulatory requirements or disruptions to its air-cargo network.

Investors will be watching the FAA and NTSB investigation, the restoration of full airport operations and any findings that could affect cargo-airline procedures. The broader question for Amazon is whether the accident remains an isolated operational event or leads to additional costs, regulatory scrutiny or changes in how the company manages its rapidly expanding logistics infrastructure.
