U.S. stocks came under pressure on September 28 as higher Treasury yields and elevated oil prices raised concerns about inflation and the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path. Oil prices retreated from their intraday highs after renewed expectations for Middle East negotiations offered some relief to markets worried about further disruptions to global energy supplies.

Wall Street Declines as Treasury Yields Rise

The major U.S. indexes ended lower, with the S&P 500 falling 0.8% to 7,683.69, the Nasdaq Composite declining 0.9% to 26,820.38 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing 0.7% to 51,481.51. The decline came as bond yields continued to rise, increasing pressure on equity valuations and raising the cost of financing across the economy.

The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.23%, its highest level since 2007, while the 30-year yield also climbed to its highest level since 2004. The 2-year Treasury yield reached 4.937%, reflecting growing expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a restrictive policy stance for longer as energy prices add to inflationary pressure.

Oil Pulls Back as Negotiation Hopes Return

Oil prices initially surged more than $4 a barrel after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Prices later eased as Qatari mediators prepared to hold talks with both the United States and Iran in an effort to advance a potential agreement.

U.S. crude ultimately settled at $92.60 a barrel, up 19 cents, while Brent crude ended at $105.28, an increase of 96 cents. The retreat from the session highs highlighted the sensitivity of energy markets to diplomatic developments, particularly while uncertainty remains around oil flows through the Middle East.

Inflation Risk Keeps the Fed in Focus

The rise in oil prices is important for financial markets because prolonged increases in energy costs can feed into broader inflation. That could complicate the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions if price pressures remain elevated even as economic activity and corporate earnings continue to show resilience.

Higher borrowing costs are also particularly relevant for technology and AI companies that are investing heavily in infrastructure. Nvidia was an exception to the broader market decline, with its shares rising 1.7% after the company announced a record $150 billion increase in its share repurchase authorization.

Markets will remain focused on developments in U.S.-Iran negotiations, conditions around the Strait of Hormuz and the direction of crude prices. Investors will also be watching inflation and labor-market data for clues about the Federal Reserve’s next steps. A sustained decline in geopolitical risk could ease pressure on energy prices and bond yields, while renewed supply disruptions could reinforce inflation concerns and keep financial conditions tight as the final quarter of the year begins.
