Key Points
- U.S. stocks declined on September 28 as investors weighed elevated oil prices, Treasury yields and uncertainty surrounding the outlook for U.S.-Iran negotiations.
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.45%, the S&P 500 declined 0.54%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.60%.
- Nvidia gained after announcing a record $150 billion increase to its share-repurchase authorization, while Tesla declined following a price-target reduction from J.P. Morgan.
Wall Street retreated on September 28 as elevated oil prices and Treasury yields continued to challenge U.S. equities, with investors assessing the potential economic consequences of prolonged Middle East tensions and the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook. The main indexes pared deeper intraday losses as crude prices and bond yields eased from their session highs, but the market remained sensitive to developments surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations and inflation risks.
Oil Prices Keep Inflation Risks in Focus
Oil markets were a major driver of sentiment after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian peace proposal, raising uncertainty over the possibility of a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Crude prices initially surged before giving back part of their gains as expectations emerged that Qatari mediators could continue efforts to facilitate negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
The energy market remains particularly important for equities because sustained increases in crude prices can feed into transportation, production and consumer costs. That creates a difficult backdrop for the Federal Reserve, which is attempting to guide inflation toward its 2% target while balancing economic activity and employment. Reuters reported that the 10-year Treasury yield also remained elevated, reinforcing pressure on rate-sensitive areas of the equity market.
Treasury Yields Add Pressure to Equities
Higher Treasury yields increase borrowing costs throughout the economy and can also affect equity valuations by raising the return available from government securities. The benchmark 10-year yield had recently approached 5%, with investors increasingly focused on whether persistent inflation and higher energy costs could encourage the Federal Reserve to maintain a restrictive policy stance for longer.
The yield environment has been particularly relevant for technology stocks, whose valuations can be more sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations. Earlier in September, rising oil prices and concerns about government debt had already pushed Treasury yields to multi-year highs, weighing on high-growth technology and semiconductor shares before the market subsequently recovered.
Nvidia Gains While Tesla Comes Under Pressure
Individual stocks showed a more mixed performance. Nvidia gained after the semiconductor company announced an additional $150 billion share-repurchase authorization, taking its remaining buyback capacity to $235 billion. The move provided a counterweight to broader market weakness and highlighted the company’s substantial cash-generation capacity amid continued AI infrastructure spending.
Tesla, by contrast, declined after J.P. Morgan reduced its price target for the electric-vehicle manufacturer. The divergence illustrates how company-specific developments continued to influence market performance even as macroeconomic risks dominated the broader session.
Fed Policy Remains Central to Market Direction
The Federal Reserve remains a critical variable for both equity and bond markets. The central bank raised its policy rate last week to a range of 3.75% to 4%, while officials have continued to emphasize that inflation risks have not disappeared. Reuters reported earlier that traders were pricing a meaningful probability of another rate increase in October, following the September move.
For global investors, including those managing U.S. exposure from Israel, the coming sessions will center on the interaction between oil prices, Treasury yields, inflation data and Federal Reserve guidance. A sustained rise in energy costs could complicate the disinflation process and keep borrowing costs elevated, while progress toward a Middle East diplomatic agreement could reduce some of the immediate pressure on crude prices and risk assets. The balance between these forces will remain important for U.S. equities as markets move toward the final quarter of 2026.
