RBNZ Surprises Markets With Rate Hold

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand delivered an unexpected decision on Wednesday by keeping interest rates unchanged, despite market expectations favoring an increase. The decision was reached by a narrow vote, with policymakers agreeing that tighter monetary policy would be necessary.

According to Westpac, it was the first time outside the pandemic that the central bank held rates while markets had priced in more than a 70% probability of a hike.

The New Zealand dollar fell more than 1% following the announcement. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar strengthened 2% against its New Zealand counterpart, reaching its highest level in 13 years.

The decision highlighted the potential gap between market expectations and central bank assessments. It also raised the possibility that investors may have moved too far in anticipating interest rate increases across major economies.

Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada in Focus

The RBNZ decision preceded further monetary policy announcements from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada later on Wednesday.

The Federal Reserve was widely expected to leave rates unchanged, while markets anticipated a 25-basis-point increase from the Bank of Canada, although that expectation remained subject to change.

The New Zealand decision reinforced the importance of policymakers’ guidance rather than market pricing alone. As Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist Carol Kong noted, central banks remain willing to surprise investors rather than follow market expectations.

In Australia, third-quarter inflation accelerated, driven partly by higher fuel costs. Persistent underlying price pressures strengthened expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia could deliver a fifth interest rate increase as soon as the following week.

SK Hynix Results Support Asian Equities

Asian equities remained supported by strong results from South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, which reported a more than sevenfold increase in quarterly profit as artificial intelligence infrastructure demand continued to push memory chip prices higher.

The company also announced approximately $75 billion in shareholder returns, adding to investor attention on the financial benefits of the AI investment cycle.

The results provided support for technology stocks as investors awaited earnings from Alphabet and Microsoft. Their performance is expected to offer further evidence of whether demand for AI services can justify the substantial cost of infrastructure expansion.

AI Financing Concerns Remain

Despite the strength of selected technology earnings, investors continue to question the sustainability of AI-related capital expenditure.

Rising bond yields at AI cloud providers such as CoreWeave and record costs to insure Meta Platforms’ debt have intensified concerns about how the sector’s infrastructure buildout is being financed.

These pressures are particularly relevant as expectations for higher US interest rates increase the cost of capital. Technology companies must demonstrate that infrastructure investment can generate sufficient revenue and cash flow to support continued expansion.

Geopolitical Developments Add Uncertainty

Political uncertainty also remained in focus, with exit polls from Israel’s wartime election indicating a closely contested race between the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot and the camp of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The reported deadlock left neither side with a clear path to power, adding another source of uncertainty to the broader market environment.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Investors will monitor the Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada decisions for signals about the direction of interest rates, while developments in Australian inflation could influence expectations for the next Reserve Bank of Australia meeting.

Currency movements following the RBNZ surprise may also reveal whether markets are reassessing the pace of global monetary tightening. At the same time, Alphabet’s and Microsoft’s earnings will be important for determining whether AI-driven growth can sustain technology sector momentum despite financing concerns.
