U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday as renewed momentum in artificial intelligence-related shares helped Wall Street overcome concerns about elevated borrowing costs and the sustainability of debt-funded technology spending. The Nasdaq led the advance as third-quarter earnings season accelerated and the Federal Reserve began its penultimate policy meeting of the year.

Nasdaq Leads Renewed Technology Rally

The Nasdaq gained 1.18%, significantly outperforming the broader market, while the S&P 500 rose 0.60% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.03%. The performance reflected renewed demand for technology shares as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence spending and the companies supplying the infrastructure behind the sector.

Chip stocks were among the strongest performers. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced for a third consecutive session, supported in part by growing attention around details of Anthropic’s impending initial public offering. The interest has provided fresh momentum to semiconductor companies after concerns earlier this month about the financial sustainability of the AI investment cycle weighed on the sector.

AI Spending Remains a Major Market Driver

The latest rally comes despite growing concerns over the ability of companies to sustain debt-funded AI spending as borrowing costs remain elevated. Investors have increasingly questioned whether the enormous investments required for data centers, processors and computing infrastructure can generate sufficient returns over time.

Nevertheless, available evidence continues to point to strong spending across the AI ecosystem. Semiconductor companies remain major beneficiaries of that demand, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gaining 62.1% year to date, compared with a 12.8% advance for the S&P 500. The semiconductor index, however, remains more than 20% below its June 22 record closing high, showing that the sector has not fully recovered from its earlier decline.

Boeing Loss Highlights Mixed Earnings Picture

The broader earnings season remains uneven. Boeing shares declined following the aerospace company’s quarterly loss, demonstrating that company-specific financial performance continues to influence individual stocks even as broader market sentiment improves.

That divergence is important for investors because the current market advance is increasingly concentrated around themes associated with AI and technology. Strong results or spending signals from companies connected to artificial intelligence can provide support for major indexes, while weaker earnings elsewhere can limit the breadth of the rally.

Fed Decision Adds a Key Market Catalyst

The Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting introduces another major variable for markets. Investors are assessing how policymakers will balance economic conditions and inflation against the financial effects of interest rates that continue to influence corporate borrowing and investment decisions.

The Fed’s decision and accompanying guidance will be particularly important for technology valuations because higher borrowing costs can raise the financial burden associated with the capital-intensive AI buildout. Markets will also monitor whether policymakers signal a shift in the rate outlook and how that could affect risk appetite.

Wall Street’s next direction will depend on the interaction between earnings, AI spending and monetary policy. Continued evidence of strong technology investment could support the recent recovery in semiconductor shares, while renewed concerns about financing costs or weaker corporate results could challenge the rally. The Fed’s guidance and upcoming earnings reports will therefore provide important signals on whether the latest AI-driven momentum represents a durable market trend or another short-term rebound.
