Key Points
- Wall Street advanced on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq Composite rising 1.25%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.68% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increasing 0.12% as technology shares supported the market.
- AI-linked stocks strengthened, with semiconductor shares rising 3.2% and Broadcom gaining almost 4% amid financing developments involving its AI chips for Anthropic.
- Investors are preparing for major technology earnings and the Federal Reserve’s policy decision, with inflation, energy prices and the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending remaining key market considerations.
Wall Street Advances Ahead of Key Catalysts
US stocks advanced on Tuesday as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence continued to support technology shares ahead of major corporate earnings reports and the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision. Easing oil prices also helped improve investor sentiment, although inflation concerns and uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict remained in focus.
At 11:52 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.12% to 52,423.99. The S&P 500 gained 0.68% to 7,728.74, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.25% to 26,495.17.
Technology shares led the broader market higher, with six of the S&P 500’s 11 major sectors trading in positive territory. Energy stocks lagged as crude prices declined for a second consecutive session, although Brent remained near its highest level since late April.
AI Stocks Regain Momentum
AI-linked stocks continued to recover following several difficult weeks. The semiconductor index rose 3.2%, marking its third consecutive daily gain. Tesla shares climbed 3.8% to their highest level in more than three months, while Broadcom advanced almost 4%.
Broadcom attracted investor interest after several Wall Street banks and Blackstone lined up to finance its AI chips for Anthropic. The development highlighted continued investment in the infrastructure supporting advanced AI systems.
The positive performance followed Anthropic’s disclosure of its filing for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering. The company’s rapid revenue growth has attracted attention, but its substantial losses and spending commitments have also intensified scrutiny of the economics underpinning the AI boom.
Investors are now looking to earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon for evidence that expanding demand for AI services can support the significant costs associated with computing infrastructure.
Federal Reserve Decision Remains in Focus
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged on Wednesday following an increase last month. However, markets are pricing in at least two additional rate increases by mid-2027 as inflation remains elevated.
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has contributed to uncertainty over energy prices and the inflation outlook. Although Brent crude has eased in recent sessions, prices remain high enough to sustain concerns about the potential impact on household expenses, business costs and monetary policy.
The combination of persistent inflation and strong AI-related investment has complicated the outlook for financial markets. Investors must assess whether corporate earnings can continue growing while financing conditions remain restrictive.
Boeing Weighs on the Dow
Boeing shares fell 9.5% after Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg said the company would not reach its targeted 737 production rate until early 2027. The decline limited gains in the Dow despite the broader market advance.
General Motors also drew attention after announcing plans to switch its stock listing to Nasdaq. The move came as technology-oriented shares and AI-related companies remained prominent drivers of market activity.
Among the strongest performers were AI infrastructure providers CoreWeave and Nebius, server makers Dell and Super Micro, and data storage company Western Digital. Their gains reflected continued investor interest in companies supplying the hardware and infrastructure required for AI expansion.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The upcoming earnings reports from major technology companies will be important in determining whether the latest recovery in AI stocks can be sustained. Investors will focus on cloud revenue growth, capital expenditure plans and evidence that AI investments are translating into durable financial returns.
The Federal Reserve’s decision and commentary will also influence expectations for borrowing costs. A combination of elevated inflation, continued energy market uncertainty and heavy AI spending could keep markets sensitive to both corporate guidance and changes in monetary policy.
