Key Points
- EURO STOXX 50 gained 0.79% and DAX rose 0.71%, leading the listed equity benchmarks.
- MSCI Europe declined 0.36%, while the Euronext 100, CAC 40, and FTSE 100 were unchanged.
- European currencies weakened, with the Euro falling 0.43% and the British Pound declining 0.25%.
European Markets Show Diverging Performance
European markets delivered a mixed performance on October 28, with gains in selected continental benchmarks offset by declines and unchanged readings across other indexes. The EURO STOXX 50 advanced 0.79% to 6,164.69, while the DAX rose 0.71% to 25,590.77.
The Euronext 100 and CAC 40 were unchanged at 1,871.40 and 7,887.14, respectively. The MSCI Europe declined 0.36% to 2,723.27, while the FTSE 100 remained unchanged at 10,686.54.
The European Private Equity index also moved lower, falling 0.14% to 10,411.65. The revised figures show a more divided session than a broad regional recovery, with stronger performances in the EURO STOXX 50 and DAX offset by weakness in the wider European index.
Major European Equity Benchmarks Diverge
The EURO STOXX 50 recorded the strongest gain among the listed equity benchmarks, followed by the DAX. In contrast, the MSCI Europe posted a decline, while the Euronext 100, CAC 40, and FTSE 100 showed no percentage change.
This divergence indicates that the session’s gains were concentrated in selected benchmarks rather than shared across the entire European market. European Private Equity also finished lower, adding to the mixed overall picture.
European Currencies Weaken
European currency indexes declined during the session. The PHLX Euro fell 0.43% to 111.28, while the PHLX British Pound decreased 0.25% to 133.09.
Both currencies weakened despite gains in the EURO STOXX 50 and DAX, highlighting the different directions taken by equities and currencies.
Outlook
European markets enter the next session with no clear region-wide direction. The EURO STOXX 50 and DAX advanced, but the MSCI Europe declined and three major benchmarks remained unchanged.
Investors will monitor whether the stronger performance in selected indexes broadens across the region and whether the euro and pound stabilize following their latest declines.
