European Gas Prices Climb Amid Supply Concerns

European natural gas prices climbed above €95/MWh on Monday, reaching a fresh high for 2022 as escalating military conflict in the Middle East intensified concerns about energy availability ahead of winter.

The EU natural gas benchmark rose to €95.80/MWh on October 26, up 2.07% from the previous day. Prices have increased 34.40% over the past month and are 202.65% higher than a year earlier, according to the reported contract-for-difference data tracking the benchmark market.

The latest gains reflect concerns that disruptions to global energy flows could leave Europe competing for available supplies as temperatures decline. With winter approaching, the combination of constrained LNG shipments and below-average storage levels has increased market sensitivity to further supply disruptions.

Persian Gulf LNG Disruptions Add Pressure

Liquefied natural gas shipments from the Persian Gulf, which accounted for approximately one-fifth of global supply before the conflict, remain largely disrupted. Reported flows are approximately 80% below levels recorded a year earlier.

The reduction has intensified concerns about the availability of LNG in international markets. Disruptions to a major supply source can increase competition among importing regions and expose buyers to greater price volatility.

For Europe, the timing is particularly significant because gas demand typically increases as temperatures fall. Any prolonged interruption to shipments could complicate efforts to maintain adequate supplies while meeting seasonal heating requirements.

The duration and extent of the disruption will therefore remain important factors in determining the direction of European gas prices.

Storage Levels Increase Winter Vulnerability

European gas storage was at 74.62% of capacity on October 25, below historical averages for this time of year. Some EU countries have already begun withdrawing gas from storage as temperatures decline.

Storage provides an important buffer against temporary supply interruptions and seasonal increases in demand. Lower-than-usual reserves reduce the margin available to absorb further disruptions, particularly if LNG deliveries remain constrained.

The current position leaves the European market more exposed to changes in weather, consumption and international supply availability. A combination of colder conditions and continued shipping disruptions could place additional upward pressure on prices in the coming months.

Prices Continue Their Strong Annual Rise

The latest price increase extends a substantial rally in European natural gas. The benchmark has gained 34.40% over the past month and 202.65% year over year.

Despite the recent surge, the historical record cited in the data remains considerably higher. EU natural gas previously reached an all-time high of 345 in March 2022, although the supplied data does not specify a unit for that historical figure.

The current market direction reflects the renewed importance of supply security as Europe approaches the winter heating season. The scale of the annual increase also highlights the sensitivity of gas prices to changes in geopolitical conditions and expectations for available supply.

What Energy Markets Should Watch Next

The outlook for European natural gas will depend on the duration of Middle East supply disruptions, the pace of withdrawals from storage and the trajectory of winter demand.

Investors and energy market participants will be watching whether LNG flows recover and whether storage levels remain sufficient to absorb seasonal consumption. Further disruption combined with colder weather could sustain upward pressure on prices, while improved supply availability could ease some of the immediate concerns.

With storage below historical averages and international shipments constrained, developments in supply security will remain central to Europe’s energy market outlook.
