Key Points
- Major industry consolidation: EQT agreed to acquire Range Resources in an all-stock transaction valued at $13 billion, creating the largest natural gas producer in the United States and strengthening its position ahead of anticipated demand growth.
- AI and LNG drive demand expectations: EQT CEO Toby Rice raised the company’s estimate for natural gas demand growth in the Appalachian region to more than 25 billion cubic feet per day, driven by LNG exports, data centers and gas-fired power generation.
- International market access expands: EQT aims to increase its exposure to international gas markets while maintaining its strategic target of 15% of sales, seeking to benefit from the substantial price difference between US and overseas natural gas markets.
EQT Expands Its Position Through Range Acquisition
EQT’s planned $13 billion acquisition of Range Resources highlights the accelerating consolidation of the US natural gas industry as producers position themselves for expected growth in demand.
Under the all-stock agreement announced on Monday, Pittsburgh-area producer EQT will acquire Fort Worth-based Range Resources. The combination will create the country’s largest natural gas producer, overtaking Expand Energy.
EQT, currently the second-largest US gas producer, expects the transaction to strengthen its access to two major markets: domestic demand in Appalachia and international demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The deal comes as producers seek to secure supply for new LNG export capacity and expanding electricity demand, particularly from data centers. However, near-term oversupply has weighed on US natural gas prices and forced some operators to reduce production.
Appalachian Demand Outlook Strengthens
EQT CEO Toby Rice said the company had increased its estimate for natural gas demand growth in the Appalachian region to more than 25 billion cubic feet per day, up from a previous projection of approximately 20 billion cubic feet per day.
Rice expects roughly half of the additional demand to remain within the region, supplying uses such as power generation for data centers. The remainder is expected to depend on pipeline projects that transport gas beyond the basin.
These include EQT’s Mountain Valley Boost project, intended to move additional gas from West Virginia to Virginia, and its proposed POWER project, which would transport gas from Pennsylvania to Ohio.
Appalachia, encompassing the Marcellus and Utica shale basins across Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, accounts for approximately one-third of US natural gas production.
LNG Exports Offer Access to Higher-Priced Markets
EQT also sees the acquisition as an opportunity to expand its access to international markets without abandoning its target of limiting international exposure to 15% of gas sales.
Rice said the larger production base would provide additional capacity to increase LNG exposure while maintaining the company’s strategic target.
The price differential between domestic and overseas markets provides a potential incentive. At the time of the report, US natural gas traded below $4 per million British thermal units, compared with prices above $30 in Europe and Asia.
However, capturing these international prices depends on access to export infrastructure and the ability to deliver gas to overseas buyers. The acquisition strengthens EQT’s production position, while the broader industry continues to develop the infrastructure needed to serve growing demand.
Consolidation Reshapes the US Gas Industry
The EQT-Range transaction follows other major combinations in the sector. Devon Energy merged with Coterra Energy in May 2026, creating the country’s third-largest gas producer, while Chesapeake Energy’s merger with Southwestern Energy in October 2024 formed Expand Energy.
Analysts expect further consolidation, particularly in the Northeast, where several publicly traded producers hold Appalachian assets.
Rystad Energy’s Matthew Bernstein said additional combinations in the region would be a natural next step. Mizuho analysts also argued that concentrating US shale gas assets among fewer producers could improve capital discipline as demand from LNG exports, AI data centers and electrification grows.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors will monitor the completion and integration of the EQT-Range transaction, the pace of Appalachian pipeline development and the arrival of new LNG export capacity. The extent to which data center electricity demand translates into additional natural gas consumption will also influence the sector’s long-term outlook.
Near-term prices remain an important consideration. Although EQT expects structural demand growth, the current supply surplus demonstrates that rising demand forecasts do not necessarily translate into immediate price increases.
