Key Points
- Gold recovered modestly after its sharp weekly decline, trading near $4,150 an ounce as investors reassessed the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook.
- September payroll growth of just 29,000 reduced expectations for an October rate hike, with markets pricing roughly a 20% probability compared with 70% a week earlier.
- Inflation risks remain a key constraint for gold, with higher oil prices and elevated Treasury yields keeping investors focused on the balance between economic weakness and persistent price pressures.
Gold edged higher after suffering its largest weekly decline since June, as investors weighed weaker U.S. employment data against elevated bond yields and continuing inflation risks. Spot gold rose 0.3% to $4,153.66 an ounce as of 8:40 a.m. in Singapore.
The move followed a 3.4% decline last week, highlighting how quickly expectations surrounding monetary policy can influence precious-metal prices. Because gold does not generate interest income, higher borrowing costs can make the asset less attractive relative to interest-bearing investments.
Weak Payrolls Change the Fed Equation
The September U.S. employment report provided a significant shift in the rate outlook. Nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000, falling below every estimate in the referenced economist survey.
The weaker labor-market performance reduced expectations for an immediate increase in borrowing costs. Markets were pricing approximately a 20% probability of a rate hike in October, sharply below the 70% probability seen one week earlier.
For gold, the change potentially removes one of the key pressures that contributed to last month’s decline. A less aggressive Fed outlook can reduce the opportunity cost of holding bullion, although the impact remains dependent on the interaction between inflation, yields and economic growth.
Inflation Risks Continue to Complicate the Outlook
The weaker employment picture does not eliminate inflation concerns. Oil prices have risen amid widening conflict in the Middle East, creating another potential source of pressure on consumer prices.
That dynamic leaves policymakers facing competing signals. Slower employment growth could argue against tighter monetary policy, while higher energy costs could make inflation more persistent. Gold therefore remains sensitive to both sides of the policy equation.
The metal declined more than 6% last month as investors became increasingly concerned about energy-driven inflation and the possibility of higher U.S. interest rates.
Fed Minutes Become the Next Major Catalyst
Investors are now looking toward the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, due mid-week, for additional clues about the policy path. The meeting marked the first rate increase in three years, making the detailed discussion particularly important for markets attempting to assess how officials view inflation and economic conditions.
The minutes could help determine whether the latest labor-market weakness materially changes expectations or whether policymakers remain concerned enough about inflation to keep the possibility of tighter policy on the table.
Precious Metals Regain Momentum
Gold was not the only precious metal to advance. Silver gained 1.3% to $61.15 an ounce after falling more than 6% the previous week. Platinum and palladium also moved higher.
Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed after advancing for three consecutive weeks. Currency movements remain another important variable for bullion because shifts in the dollar can influence the purchasing power and international demand for dollar-denominated gold.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The immediate direction of gold will likely depend on whether weaker labor-market data becomes the dominant signal for monetary policy or whether energy-driven inflation keeps pressure on the Federal Reserve. A sustained decline in rate-hike expectations could provide support for bullion, while renewed increases in Treasury yields could limit its recovery.
The upcoming Fed minutes, developments in oil markets and the next series of inflation and employment indicators will therefore be critical. For investors, the central question is increasingly whether economic weakness is strong enough to outweigh the inflation risks that pushed gold lower in September.
