Key Points

  • South Korea is set to direct up to $200 billion toward U.S. projects under a broader $350 billion strategic investment framework linked to the two countries’ trade agreement.
  • The package includes $120 billion for eight nuclear reactors and $22.3 billion for a Texas gas-fired power project intended to supply electricity to energy-intensive facilities, including AI data centers.
  • Seoul has not finalized its participation in the Alaska LNG project, saying commercial viability and legal conditions must be assessed before determining whether to invest or how much to commit.

President Donald Trump announced plans Wednesday for South Korea to invest up to $200 billion in U.S. projects, representing the first major projects under a broader $350 billion strategic investment framework agreed between Washington and Seoul. The wider package includes $150 billion designated for shipbuilding and another $200 billion for strategic investments.

The announced projects span nuclear power, natural gas and electricity generation. Trump said the investment would include eight large-scale nuclear power plants, a natural-gas pipeline and a 6-gigawatt power-generation facility in Texas.

South Korean officials confirmed important parts of the package. Seoul said it plans to invest $120 billion in eight nuclear reactors and $22.3 billion in a Texas gas-fired power project designed to provide electricity to AI data centers.

Why Is Alaska LNG the Main Point of Uncertainty?

The Alaska LNG project has emerged as the most significant unresolved component of the announcement. Trump presented the proposed $54 billion pipeline investment as part of the broader package, but South Korea’s government said no final decision had been made on either the investment or its size.

Seoul’s industry ministry said it would review the project’s commercial viability and compliance with legal procedures. President Lee Jae Myung also said the commercial viability of both the LNG project and the nuclear investments must be established before they proceed.

That distinction is important for investors because the $200 billion figure includes projects at different stages of development rather than representing a single immediately deployable investment commitment.

What Would the Alaska LNG Project Involve?

If ultimately approved, Alaska LNG would include an approximately 807-mile pipeline transporting natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to a liquefaction facility on the state’s southern coast. The project is designed to move about 3.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and produce up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually.

The project has faced years of uncertainty surrounding financing, costs and commercial viability. According to current reporting, the developer has secured tentative commitments covering 13 million metric tons of annual LNG capacity but needs another 3 million tons to support a final investment decision.

Could U.S. AI Power Demand Support the Investment?

The Texas gas-fired project illustrates how South Korean investment is increasingly being connected to rising U.S. electricity demand. The $22.3 billion facility is expected to supply power to energy-intensive operations, including semiconductor manufacturing and AI data centers, with initial operations targeted for 2029.

The nuclear component also aligns with growing U.S. electricity requirements. Eight reactors would form part of the broader effort to expand nuclear generation as demand from data centers, manufacturing and other energy-intensive industries increases.

What Could the Investment Mean for U.S.-South Korea Economic Relations?

The investment framework expands the economic relationship between Washington and Seoul beyond traditional trade into energy, advanced manufacturing and strategic infrastructure. The underlying agreement provides for $200 billion of Korean strategic investment alongside $150 billion directed toward U.S. shipbuilding.

However, implementation will depend on individual projects meeting commercial, legal and financing requirements. The uncertainty surrounding Alaska LNG demonstrates that announcements at the government level do not necessarily translate immediately into finalized private or public investment decisions.

What Comes Next for the Investment Package?

The next stage will focus on project-level due diligence, financing structures and binding commitments. For Alaska LNG, the key milestones include Seoul’s commercial review, additional LNG purchase commitments and progress toward a final investment decision.

For investors, the broader opportunity extends across nuclear power, natural gas, electricity infrastructure, LNG and AI-related energy demand. The scale of the proposed package is significant, but the eventual economic impact will depend on how many projects move from announced commitments into construction and long-term operation.
