Key Points
- Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, begins global sales at a price of about $2,000.
- The launch is largely concentrated around pre-orders and limited inventory, resulting in less visible retail excitement than previous iPhone launches.
- IDC expects the Duo to become the foldables market leader in 2027, making the product an important test for Apple's next phase of smartphone growth.
Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of its first folding device, the iPhone Duo, placing the company in direct competition with established premium foldable manufacturers. The approximately $2,000 price tag and constrained initial supply make the launch an important test of whether Apple can reshape another smartphone category as dramatically as it transformed the broader mobile-phone market.
Apple Enters an Established Foldable Market
The iPhone Duo began reaching stores around the world on Friday, including markets such as Singapore, Shanghai, London and Berlin. Demand appeared strong, but sales were rationed, limiting the large crowds and overnight queues traditionally associated with major iPhone launches.
Apple is entering a segment where Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies have already sold premium foldable smartphones for years. The competitive challenge is therefore different from Apple’s original iPhone launch, when the company helped establish an entirely new category.
The Duo instead arrives in an existing market and must demonstrate that Apple’s hardware, software and ecosystem can generate sufficient demand at the premium end of the segment.
A $2,000 Price Tests Apple’s Premium Strategy
At around $2,000, the iPhone Duo sits firmly in the premium smartphone category. That price makes the economics of the product particularly important because foldable devices generally involve more complex hardware than conventional smartphones.
The limited supply at launch could support the perception of strong demand, but it also makes early sales figures more difficult to interpret. The source indicates that many customers were focused on collecting pre-orders, while others arrived hoping to find limited inventory.
For Apple, the longer-term test will be whether demand remains strong once availability improves and consumers have more opportunity to compare the Duo with competing foldable models.
New Leadership Adds Strategic Importance
The launch could also become an early test for new Apple CEO John Ternus. The company has built much of its recent smartphone success on incremental product improvements, but the foldable category presents an opportunity to introduce a substantially different form factor.
The product’s performance could therefore influence perceptions of Apple’s ability to generate new hardware growth as the conventional smartphone market matures. A successful foldable franchise could create an additional premium product segment while strengthening Apple’s position against competitors already established in the category.
Foldables Could Become Apple’s Next Growth Opportunity
IDC expects the iPhone Duo to become the foldables market leader in 2027, giving the launch significance beyond its initial sales period. Achieving that position would require Apple to convert strong early interest into sustained demand while maintaining supply and managing the premium pricing structure.
Going forward, investors will monitor Duo sales, production capacity, customer adoption and Apple’s competitive response to Samsung and Huawei. The most important question will be whether the Duo becomes a meaningful new growth engine for Apple or remains a niche premium product within an increasingly diversified smartphone market.
