Amazon Engineers Face Internal Investigation

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is investigating several employees after they spoke publicly against the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers during recent Seattle City Council meetings.

The controversy stems from public hearings held earlier this month as Seattle officials considered a one-year moratorium on the construction of large-scale data centers. The city ultimately approved the temporary pause on June 9, citing the need for additional regulatory review.

Five Amazon employees testified during the hearings, arguing that governments should exercise greater oversight of AI infrastructure development and questioning what they described as an “all-costs-justified AI buildout.”

Employees Report Being Questioned

According to a complaint filed with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights, three Amazon engineers were subsequently contacted by company representatives and informed that an internal investigation had been opened regarding their public testimony.

The employees said they were interviewed by human resources personnel and told that potential disciplinary action could result from the investigation. One employee reportedly understood that possible consequences could range up to termination.

The complaint alleges that Amazon’s actions created uncertainty and concern among workers who participated in the public policy discussions.

Amazon Defends Investigation

Amazon stated that the investigation is focused on whether employees properly represented themselves during public appearances rather than the substance of their opinions.

Company spokesperson Margaret Callahan said Amazon respects employees’ rights to express personal views but maintains policies regarding when workers may speak on behalf of the company.

According to Amazon, the review is intended to determine whether the employees presented themselves as private citizens or appeared to be speaking in an official capacity as Amazon representatives.

“We’re investigating whether there was a violation of our policies and may or may not take action based on what we find,” the company said.

Amazon also disputed claims that employees were threatened with termination and emphasized that it does not tolerate retaliation.

The employees involved are associated with Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ), a worker advocacy group that has frequently challenged the company’s policies on environmental sustainability, labor practices, and corporate governance.

The organization has increasingly focused on the environmental impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure, arguing that the rapid growth of AI data centers raises concerns about energy consumption, water usage, and local community impacts.

AECJ has urged Amazon and other technology companies to implement stronger safeguards as AI adoption accelerates.

The dispute comes as Amazon dramatically increases investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company plans to spend as much as $200 billion on capital expenditures this year, with a substantial portion dedicated to AI-related data centers, computing capacity, and cloud infrastructure.

At the same time, Amazon has reduced its corporate workforce by approximately 30,000 employees since late 2025 as CEO Andy Jassy pursues operational efficiencies while expanding AI capabilities.
