Key Points
- Alphabet's Qualcomm Investment: Alphabet established a stake worth nearly $548 million in Qualcomm during the third quarter, strengthening its financial position in a longtime technology partner.
- Data Center Expansion: Qualcomm is pursuing opportunities in AI infrastructure, targeting $15 billion in data-center chip revenue by 2029 as cloud providers seek alternatives to Nvidia processors.
- Growing Industry Partnerships: Qualcomm has secured support from major technology companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, as it develops its position in the AI data-center market.
Alphabet Builds Position in Qualcomm
Alphabet acquired a stake worth nearly $548 million in Qualcomm during the third quarter, providing a financial boost to the chipmaker as it expands beyond its established smartphone business.
The investment comes at a time when Qualcomm is seeking to strengthen its presence in the data-center market amid growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company has traditionally been a major supplier of processors for smartphones using Google’s Android operating system.
Qualcomm shares rose 3% in premarket trading following the disclosure of Alphabet’s investment. The stock had fallen more than 9% on Thursday after the company reported weaker-than-expected September-quarter results, alongside a broader technology market sell-off.
Longstanding Technology Partnership
Alphabet and Qualcomm have maintained a close commercial relationship across several technology segments.
Qualcomm processors have powered virtually all major smartphones running Google’s Android operating system. More recently, the companies collaborated on Google’s new premium laptop lineup, Googlebook, which uses Qualcomm processors.
Their relationship also expanded into automotive technology through a 2024 agreement to develop chips and software supporting artificial intelligence adoption in vehicles.
Alphabet’s investment adds a financial dimension to this existing partnership as Qualcomm seeks to establish new growth opportunities beyond mobile devices.
Qualcomm Targets AI Data Center Market
Qualcomm is increasing its efforts to become a supplier to the expanding AI infrastructure market. Over the past year, the company has approached cloud service providers with custom AI processors as major technology companies increasingly develop their own chips and look for alternatives to Nvidia’s higher-cost products.
The company expects its data-center chip revenue to reach $15 billion by 2029, reflecting its ambitions to build a larger position in the sector.
In September, Qualcomm reached an agreement with Amazon that allows the technology company to purchase up to $60 billion worth of Qualcomm AI data-center chips and related products. The agreement also includes warrants giving Amazon the option to purchase Qualcomm shares.
Microsoft and Meta have also supported Qualcomm’s expansion through orders for its data-center processors.
Big Tech Investment and Industry Positioning
The growing involvement of major technology companies highlights the commercial opportunities emerging around AI data-center infrastructure. Cloud providers are seeking greater control over computing costs and processor supply, creating potential opportunities for chipmakers offering alternatives to established suppliers.
For Qualcomm, these partnerships could support its revenue ambitions while reducing its dependence on the smartphone market, which is experiencing a significant downturn.
Alphabet’s investment further connects the companies’ existing technology relationship with Qualcomm’s longer-term data-center strategy.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Qualcomm’s ability to convert its partnerships and customer agreements into sustained data-center revenue will be an important factor in assessing its expansion strategy. Its $15 billion revenue target for 2029 and the scale of its agreement with Amazon provide measurable indicators of its ambitions.
Investors will also be watching whether demand from cloud providers, including Microsoft and Meta, can support Qualcomm’s position in the competitive AI processor market. Alphabet’s investment adds another notable development to the company’s efforts to diversify beyond smartphones.
