Key Points
- Strong Quarterly Results: Supermicro reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $19.95 billion and earnings per share of $1.81, exceeding Wall Street expectations.
- Higher Q2 Guidance: The company forecast second-quarter sales of $19.5 billion to $21.5 billion, significantly above the analyst consensus of $16.35 billion.
- Profitability Remains in Focus: Gross margin reached 12.8%, exceeding preliminary estimates, but concerns about AI infrastructure returns and Supermicro's profitability continue to weigh on investor sentiment.
Supermicro Delivers Record Quarterly Revenue
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) reported stronger-than-expected fiscal first-quarter 2027 results, beating analyst estimates on both revenue and earnings while providing an upbeat outlook for the following quarter.
Revenue reached a record $19.95 billion, while earnings per share came in at $1.81. Both figures exceeded Wall Street projections and the company’s preliminary results.
Gross margin also improved to 12.8%, surpassing the previously indicated range of 12% to 12.5%.
CEO Charles Liang said the company’s transformation into a provider of integrated AI and IT data center solutions continues to accelerate. He highlighted demand for its Data Center Building Block Solutions, which serve projects ranging from gigawatt-scale data centers to single-container deployments.
The company is also expanding software, services, networking capabilities, enterprise partnerships, and global production capacity to support its AI infrastructure business.
Q2 Revenue Guidance Exceeds Market Expectations
Supermicro expects fiscal second-quarter sales to reach between $19.5 billion and $21.5 billion.
The forecast is substantially above the analyst consensus estimate of $16.35 billion, indicating management expects strong demand to continue into the next reporting period.
The guidance provides a significant growth signal for the company’s AI infrastructure operations. Supermicro’s expanding production capacity and enterprise partnerships are intended to support faster deployment and broader customer demand.
The difference between the company’s forecast and market expectations places particular attention on its ability to convert strong demand into sustained revenue and improved profitability.
AI Infrastructure Concerns Weigh on Investor Sentiment
Despite the strong earnings report, Supermicro shares have faced considerable pressure.
The stock declined 27% over the preceding month following a Gartner report warning that 80% of neocloud companies could cease operations by 2030 because of insufficient returns on invested capital.
The report raised concerns about the sustainability of investment in AI infrastructure and the financial viability of companies providing specialized cloud computing capacity.
CoreWeave and Nebius, two companies operating in the neocloud market, also experienced significant declines following the report. Their shares fell approximately 40% and 37%, respectively, over the same month. CoreWeave is a Supermicro customer.
These developments have intensified scrutiny of the economics supporting the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.
Profitability Remains a Key Investor Consideration
Supermicro’s quarterly gross margin of 12.8% exceeded its preliminary estimate, offering a positive indication of its profitability performance.
However, profitability remains a central concern for investors. Despite its substantial revenue growth, the company’s shares have declined 38% over the past 12 months amid questions about its ability to translate AI infrastructure demand into stronger financial returns.
The latest results demonstrate strong sales momentum, but sustained margin improvement will remain important in evaluating the quality of that growth.
Supermicro shares closed at $29.60, down 5.70%, before edging up to $29.69 in after-hours trading, an increase of 0.30%.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The next quarter will test whether Supermicro can deliver revenue within its $19.5 billion to $21.5 billion guidance range while maintaining or improving gross margins.
Investors will also be monitoring developments across the neocloud sector, particularly concerns about returns on AI infrastructure investment. As Supermicro serves customers operating in this market, changes in their financial conditions could influence demand and business visibility.
The strong first-quarter performance and higher revenue outlook reinforce Supermicro’s position in the expanding AI infrastructure market. However, the sustainability of its growth will depend on execution, profitability, and the financial strength of its customer base.
