U.S. business activity slowed modestly in October, but resilient demand allowed companies to raise prices for goods and services, creating a potentially difficult backdrop for monetary policy. The latest data point to an economy that continues to expand strongly while price pressures are becoming more pronounced, complicating the outlook for inflation and interest rates.

Private-Sector Growth Remains Strong

S&P Global said its flash U.S. Composite PMI Output Index declined to 57.6 in October from 58.4 in September, when the measure reached a five-year high. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in private-sector activity, meaning the latest figure still represents a relatively strong pace of growth despite the monthly moderation.

The data showed a divergence between major parts of the economy. Manufacturing strength helped support overall activity, while the much larger services sector experienced a slight pullback. The combination suggests that economic momentum remains intact even as the services economy loses some of its exceptional strength seen in the previous month.

Strong Demand Gives Companies Pricing Power

The more significant development was the acceleration in price pressures. The output prices gauge rose to 59.8, its highest level since August 2022, indicating that businesses are increasingly able to pass higher costs or stronger demand through to customers.

Persistent demand is important for the inflation outlook because companies generally have greater scope to raise prices when customers remain willing to spend. If this pricing strength continues, inflation could remain elevated for longer than policymakers would prefer, particularly if higher energy and other input costs add further pressure.

Manufacturers Increase Hiring to Expand Capacity

Manufacturing also provided an important signal about corporate confidence. Factory hiring reached its highest level since March 2012, reflecting efforts by manufacturers to increase capacity as demand remains strong.

Higher employment in manufacturing could support production and economic growth, but it also illustrates the tension facing policymakers. Businesses expanding capacity and hiring workers can reinforce economic activity at a time when authorities are attempting to assess whether inflationary pressures are sufficiently contained.

Fed Outlook Faces a More Complicated Data Picture

The October PMI results present a mixed picture for financial markets. Slower overall business activity could suggest that growth is beginning to moderate, but the elevated output-price measure points in the opposite direction for inflation. That combination could make the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook more difficult to navigate.

Going forward, investors will closely monitor whether the increase in business pricing pressures persists and whether the services slowdown becomes more pronounced. Additional inflation, employment and spending data will be important in determining whether strong demand eventually translates into broader price persistence or whether economic momentum moderates enough to ease inflationary pressure. The balance between resilient growth and elevated prices will remain a central variable for U.S. markets and monetary policy.
