Key Points

  • Boeing’s 777 freighter production has been halted for nearly two months following a dispute with Florida-based supplier Vaero, according to workers and court filings.
  • The dispute involves a critical trailing-edge rib kit used in the wings of the 777 freighter and 767 programs.
  • Boeing said the disruption was costing as much as $6.5 million a day, while the 777X was not affected because its wings use composite materials.

Boeing is facing another production disruption after a dispute with a small Florida-based supplier halted manufacturing of its 777 freighter for nearly two months and disrupted output of the 767 program, including freighters and KC-46 aerial refueling tankers. The dispute highlights the operational and financial risks that can emerge from dependence on specialized suppliers across complex aerospace manufacturing networks.

Supplier Dispute Stops Critical Production

Boeing filed a complaint in August alleging that supplier Vaero had stopped delivering a critical wing component known as the trailing-edge rib kit. According to the complaint reviewed by Reuters, the missing components stalled work at Boeing’s Everett, Washington, wing-production facility, which supports both the 777 freighter and 767 programs.

The disruption has continued for nearly two months, according to Boeing workers and court filings. For an aerospace manufacturer operating large and highly integrated production systems, the shortage of a relatively specialized component can have an outsized effect because final assembly depends on the timely availability of thousands of individual parts.

Financial Impact Adds Pressure on Boeing

The production interruption also carries a substantial financial cost. Boeing’s complaint said the disruption was costing the company as much as $6.5 million per day, illustrating how supplier disagreements can quickly become material operational issues when production lines are affected.

The dispute reportedly centers on pricing, with Boeing seeking to take over production of the parts in question, according to sources cited in the report. Such a move could give Boeing greater control over a critical component, but transferring manufacturing responsibilities can itself involve additional costs, technical requirements and operational complexity.

767 Program Also Faces Disruption

The impact extends beyond the 777 freighter. The Everett facility also supports the 767 program, meaning the supplier issue has disrupted production involving both commercial freighters and KC-46 aerial refueling tankers.

The KC-46 is an important Boeing defense program, while the 767 freighter remains part of the company’s commercial aircraft portfolio. Disruptions affecting multiple programs can increase pressure on production planning and delivery schedules, particularly when manufacturers are already managing complex supply chains and efforts to improve manufacturing reliability.

777X Avoids the Immediate Impact

The 777X has avoided the disruption because its wings are manufactured using composite materials rather than the same component configuration involved in the supplier dispute. That distinction limits the immediate impact on Boeing’s next-generation widebody aircraft program.

Going forward, investors and customers will be watching for developments in Boeing’s dispute with Vaero, the restoration of affected production and any decision by Boeing to bring component manufacturing in-house. The speed at which the company resolves the issue will be important not only for the 777 freighter and 767 programs but also for Boeing’s broader efforts to strengthen supply-chain resilience and control manufacturing costs across its commercial and defense operations.
