Gold edged lower on Tuesday as investors reassessed the outlook for U.S. monetary policy ahead of next week’s Federal Reserve interest-rate decision and the release of PCE inflation data. The pressure on bullion reflects a broader market debate over whether persistent inflation could require additional rate increases, increasing the relative appeal of interest-bearing assets.

Gold Faces Pressure From the Fed Outlook

Spot gold was down 0.3% at $4,125.90 per ounce by 02:05 p.m. EDT, or 1805 GMT. U.S. gold futures for December delivery settled 0.4% lower at $4,142.60 per ounce.

The decline came as traders considered the possibility that the Federal Reserve could maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer than previously expected. According to the market outlook described by Reuters, traders expect the Fed to hold rates at its October meeting while pricing the possibility of a December rate hike.

Inflation Data Takes Center Stage

Next week’s policy meeting and Personal Consumption Expenditures data will be closely watched because inflation remains central to the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions. For gold, the direction of interest rates is particularly important because bullion does not generate interest income.

When expectations for higher rates strengthen, investors can reassess the relative attractiveness of holding non-yielding gold against assets that provide income. This dynamic is currently adding pressure to bullion as markets attempt to determine whether the Fed’s fight against inflation will require additional tightening.

Treasuries Regain Defensive Appeal

The current environment has also altered the relative positioning of traditional defensive assets. Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at StoneX, said inflation and the Fed’s interest rates are the major issues confronting gold and noted that U.S. Treasuries appear more favorable than gold as a safety asset for the moment.

The shift matters because gold’s appeal is often strengthened when investors seek protection from economic or geopolitical uncertainty. If Treasury yields provide sufficient compensation while expectations for monetary policy remain restrictive, some defensive capital can instead flow toward government debt.

Geopolitical Risks Remain in the Background

Despite the focus on monetary policy, gold’s recent performance also reflects a significant change since the beginning of the Iran war. According to the Reuters report, bullion has fallen 22% since the start of the conflict, demonstrating that geopolitical risk alone has not been sufficient to sustain gold prices amid changing expectations for rates and inflation.

This highlights the competing forces currently shaping the precious-metals market. Geopolitical uncertainty can support demand for gold, while higher interest-rate expectations can create an opposing force by increasing the opportunity cost of holding bullion.

Going forward, the Fed’s October decision and upcoming PCE inflation data will be critical for determining the next direction of gold. Investors will also assess whether expectations for a December rate increase strengthen or fade, while Treasury yields and geopolitical developments remain important variables for bullion’s defensive appeal.
