Key Points
- Brent crude rose 2.77% to $107.51 a barrel, while WTI gained 2.27% to $102.32 after fresh attacks in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.
- New Houthi strikes on Saudi territory and attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz are increasing concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies.
- The shutdown of a key Saudi East-West pipeline could affect up to 4% of global oil supply if disruptions persist, adding to inflation and economic risks.
Oil prices climbed more than 2% on September 14 as new attacks on Saudi Arabia and vessels in the Gulf intensified concerns over global energy supplies. Brent crude moved above $107 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate topped $102, extending a sharp rally that has pushed both benchmarks back above $100 as geopolitical risks across key oil corridors continue to escalate.
Saudi Attacks Add to Growing Supply Concerns
Brent crude futures rose $2.90, or 2.77%, to $107.51 a barrel, while WTI futures increased $2.27, or 2.27%, to $102.32. Prices initially gained more than 3% at the start of trading as markets reacted to fresh attacks claimed by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Saudi Arabia and renewed threats to shipping routes in the region.
The latest escalation follows the closure of Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West oil pipeline after a drone strike originating from Iraq. The pipeline normally provides an alternative route for Saudi exports that avoids the Strait of Hormuz. Its continued shutdown leaves a larger share of Saudi shipments dependent on the strategic waterway, increasing the market’s sensitivity to any further disruption.
Hormuz Becomes a Critical Market Flashpoint
Concerns are also growing around the Strait of Hormuz, where a commercial vessel was struck in a recent incident. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, making any sustained disruption a direct threat to oil and gas flows. Additional pressure is emerging around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait after Houthi forces advanced on the strategic island of Perim.
The combination of damaged infrastructure and increased risks to maritime traffic is creating a more complicated supply environment for energy markets. The Saudi pipeline disruption alone could threaten up to 4% of global oil supply if it continues, while reduced shipping activity through regional chokepoints could further tighten available supplies.
Oil’s Inflation Impact Extends Beyond Energy Markets
The latest move in crude prices is also increasing pressure on the broader economic outlook. Oil above $100 a barrel raises fuel and transportation costs, while higher energy prices can feed into consumer inflation across major economies. In the United States, diesel prices have already reached record levels, highlighting how quickly energy-market disruptions can affect households and businesses.
For financial markets, the renewed oil rally could complicate monetary-policy decisions by keeping inflation elevated at a time when interest-rate expectations are already shifting. Higher energy costs can also weigh on consumer purchasing power and corporate margins, creating a more challenging environment for global equities.
Investors will now be watching the condition of Saudi Arabia’s pipeline, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz and any further attacks on regional energy infrastructure. A prolonged disruption could keep Brent above $100 and intensify inflationary pressure, while any meaningful diplomatic or military de-escalation could quickly reduce part of the risk premium currently embedded in crude prices.
