NexGen Energy is moving into a critical financing phase for its Rook I uranium project in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin, one of the world’s most important uranium-producing regions. The Canadian miner has begun construction while seeking $1 billion in capital over the next nine months, highlighting the scale of funding required to bring the project toward its targeted 2030 production start.

BHP Talks Add Strategic Dimension to Financing

NexGen Chief Executive Leigh Curyer told Reuters that the company is sharing information and talking regularly with mining giant BHP regarding Rook I when asked about the possibility of an equity investment. The discussions add a strategic dimension to NexGen’s financing plans as the company evaluates how to fund development without relying exclusively on a single source of capital.

Two sources told Reuters that BHP examined a possible acquisition of NexGen last year. While the current discussions do not establish that an acquisition or investment will occur, BHP’s continued engagement underscores the strategic relevance of a large-scale uranium development at a time when nuclear power is receiving renewed attention globally.

NexGen Builds a Multi-Source Funding Strategy

NexGen plans to consider several financing mechanisms, including prepayment agreements with utility companies, debt financing and direct project equity. The combination could allow the company to distribute financing requirements across commercial partners and capital markets while maintaining flexibility during the construction phase.

Prepayment arrangements could provide funding from future uranium buyers, while debt could increase available capital without immediately requiring additional project equity. Equity participation, meanwhile, could bring both funding and strategic expertise, although the structure and terms of any investment would be important factors in determining its impact on NexGen and the project’s ownership profile.

Rook I Advances Amid Long-Term Uranium Demand

The financing effort comes as NexGen has formally entered the construction phase of Rook I, which is expected to become one of the world’s largest uranium mines. The project is located in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin, an established uranium district, and NexGen is targeting initial production by 2030.

The project’s development timeline places particular importance on capital availability, construction execution and future uranium-market conditions. For potential financing partners, the project’s scale and long development horizon also require assessment of construction costs, permitting, infrastructure and the long-term economics of uranium production.

Over the coming nine months, the key developments will be NexGen’s progress toward securing the targeted $1 billion financing package, the structure of any agreements with utilities or financial partners, and whether BHP’s discussions develop into a formal investment. The ability to secure funding while maintaining project momentum will be central to Rook I’s path toward its targeted 2030 production timeline and could also provide an important signal about institutional appetite for large new uranium projects.
