Klarna shares fell 7% ahead of the company’s second-quarter earnings report, reversing part of a recent rally. Analysts expect a $0.06-per-share loss on approximately $995 million in revenue, placing management’s guidance on margins and credit performance at the center of the upcoming report. The mixed performance among Klarna’s BNPL peers suggests investors are managing company-specific earnings risk rather than reacting to a broad sector shock.

Investors Reduce Risk Ahead of Klarna’s Earnings

Klarna Group shares declined 7% to $19.38 ahead of the company’s second-quarter results, scheduled before the market open Tuesday. The move came after the stock had gained 4% during the previous week and 6% over the prior month, suggesting that some investors were locking in gains or reducing exposure before a potentially volatile earnings event.

Klarna remains well below its 2026 starting level, with shares down 33% year to date. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2025, making the upcoming report one of its most closely watched results since becoming a public company.

Analysts expect Klarna to report a $0.06-per-share loss on $995 million of revenue. Morgan Stanley recently raised its price target from $18 to $21 while maintaining an Equal Weight rating, while the average 12-month analyst target stands at $24.55.

Guidance Puts Margins and Credit Under the Microscope

Klarna’s own guidance provides an important benchmark for investors. Management expects second-quarter gross merchandise volume of $35.5 billion to $36.5 billion, revenue between $960 million and $1 billion, transaction margin dollars of $375 million to $395 million and adjusted operating profit of $30 million to $50 million.

With the $995 million revenue consensus positioned near the middle of management’s range, the headline sales figure may not be enough to determine the market’s reaction. Investors are likely to pay greater attention to transaction margins, operating profitability and credit-loss provisions.

The company previously warned that credit-loss provisions would rise during the second and third quarters and remain elevated into the fourth quarter because of seasonality. Management also expects growth in Fair Financing to moderate as comparisons normalize, while the benefit from a weaker U.S. dollar is expected to diminish.

BNPL Peers Offer a Mixed Market Signal

Klarna’s decline has occurred alongside weakness in several related stocks, although the magnitude varies. Sezzle shares fell 5%, while PayPal declined approximately 2% and Affirm dropped 4.17%. The differing moves suggest that investors are reducing risk across parts of the payments and BNPL landscape rather than responding to a single piece of negative Klarna news.

Klarna’s previous quarter provided both positive and cautionary signals. Revenue reached $1.012 billion, up 51.3% year over year, while the company reported a smaller-than-expected loss. Fair Financing GMV increased 138% to $4.1 billion, representing 12% of total GMV, while interest income climbed 56% to $284 million.

The challenge is converting that rapid growth into durable profitability without allowing credit costs to rise too quickly.

Market Outlook

Klarna’s upcoming earnings report could determine whether the recent share-price weakness represents routine pre-earnings positioning or a deeper reassessment of the company’s growth and credit profile. Investors will likely focus on revenue relative to the $960 million to $1 billion guidance range, transaction margin dollars, adjusted operating profit and the trajectory of credit-loss provisions. Management’s commentary on full-year GMV above $155 billion and adjusted operating profit above 6.9% of revenue could be particularly important. Strong execution and controlled credit costs could restore confidence, while weaker margins or rising provisions could extend pressure on the stock and weigh on broader BNPL sentiment.
