Samsung Electronics is projecting its strongest quarterly profitability on record, underscoring the extraordinary impact that the artificial intelligence boom is having on the global semiconductor industry. The South Korean technology giant estimated third-quarter operating profit at 107.4 trillion won, or approximately $80.2 billion, marking the first time its quarterly operating profit has exceeded the 100 trillion won threshold.

AI Demand Drives an Exceptional Earnings Surge

Samsung’s preliminary operating profit represents a 782% increase from the same period a year earlier. Revenue was estimated at approximately 195 trillion won, nearly 127% higher than in the corresponding quarter last year. The scale of the increase highlights how rapidly demand for semiconductor components has accelerated as companies expand AI infrastructure and data-center capacity.

As the world’s largest memory chipmaker, Samsung is particularly exposed to the expansion of AI computing. High-performance systems require substantial quantities of memory, making semiconductor demand a central beneficiary of the investment cycle surrounding artificial intelligence.

Memory Business Remains Central to Samsung’s Growth

The latest preliminary figures build on an already strong second quarter. Samsung reported record revenue of 171.5 trillion won and record operating profit of 89.5 trillion won in the second quarter, with its memory business playing a major role in the performance.

The progression from 89.5 trillion won in quarterly operating profit to an estimated 107.4 trillion won illustrates the momentum currently running through the company’s semiconductor operations. If confirmed in the final earnings release, the result would establish a new benchmark for Samsung’s profitability while demonstrating the financial scale of the current AI-related chip cycle.

Samsung Expands Its AI Strategy Beyond Hardware

Samsung is also positioning itself to participate more broadly in the AI ecosystem through partnerships and investment. In September, the company announced a strategic partnership with French AI startup Mistral AI, with plans to deploy Mistral’s AI models across Samsung’s semiconductor operations.

Such initiatives indicate that Samsung’s AI strategy extends beyond supplying memory for computing infrastructure. By integrating AI capabilities into its own operations and developing relationships with AI companies, the company is seeking to capture additional benefits from the technology’s expansion.

What to Watch in the Full Earnings Report

The preliminary numbers provide a clear indication of the strength of Samsung’s third-quarter performance, but investors will receive a more detailed picture when the company releases its complete earnings report later this month. The business-by-business breakdown will be particularly important for assessing how much of the profit surge came from memory and other semiconductor operations.

The key question for the next phase of Samsung’s growth is whether the extraordinary demand generated by AI infrastructure can remain strong enough to support elevated semiconductor earnings. If AI investment continues to expand, Samsung’s memory position could remain a major earnings driver. The full results should provide greater visibility into demand conditions, investment plans and the sustainability of the current profit cycle.
