Berkshire Hathaway has completed another major stage of its leadership transition, with Warren Buffett stepping down as chairman and becoming chairman emeritus. The move comes nine months after Greg Abel assumed the CEO role and places Buffett’s son Howard in the chairmanship of the $1.1 trillion conglomerate.

Buffett Moves to Chairman Emeritus Role

Buffett, 96, will remain a member of Berkshire’s board and continue to provide his judgment and perspective, according to the company. His transition formally ends his executive leadership of the group he has shaped since taking control in 1965, when Berkshire was still centered on its struggling textile operations.

Under Buffett, Berkshire developed into a diversified conglomerate spanning insurance and reinsurance, rail transportation, utilities and energy, manufacturing, services and retailing. Its businesses include GEICO, BNSF Railway and Dairy Queen, alongside a large portfolio of publicly traded securities and U.S. Treasury holdings.

The transition is therefore more than a change in a corporate title. Buffett’s leadership style, capital-allocation decisions and decentralized approach became closely associated with Berkshire’s identity, making the preservation of its corporate culture a central issue as the next generation of leadership takes greater responsibility.

Howard Buffett Takes the Chair

Howard G. Buffett, Berkshire’s new chairman, has served on the company’s board since 1993. The appointment is consistent with a succession plan that has been discussed for years and gives him a non-executive role focused primarily on the board and Berkshire’s institutional culture rather than day-to-day operations.

Berkshire CEO Greg Abel said the culture Warren Buffett built and the values he championed would remain central to the company, with Howard serving as their guardian. Howard Buffett has also led the Howard G. Buffett Foundation since 1999 and has held positions on the boards of several public and private companies.

The separation between the chairman and CEO roles is significant. Abel controls Berkshire’s operating organization, while Howard’s position places greater emphasis on board governance and continuity of the company’s management philosophy.

Abel Leads Berkshire’s Next Operating Phase

Greg Abel became Berkshire’s CEO on January 1, 2026, after serving for years as vice chairman overseeing the company’s non-insurance businesses. His responsibilities include managing a highly decentralized collection of operating companies while maintaining Berkshire’s approach of allowing individual businesses substantial autonomy.

The structure gives Berkshire a clearer division of responsibilities as it moves beyond Buffett’s direct executive leadership. The company also retains other experienced senior executives, including Vice Chairman Ajit Jain, who oversees insurance operations, and investment managers responsible for Berkshire’s substantial public-equity portfolio.

Financial Performance Provides Context for the Transition

The leadership change comes while Berkshire continues to operate at significant scale. Reuters reported that second-quarter operating profit rose 16% to $12.98 billion, while net income more than doubled to $25.67 billion, although the latter figure included unrealized gains and losses on investments.

The financial results provide context for the transition but do not remove the longer-term questions surrounding Berkshire’s post-Buffett era. Investors will increasingly assess capital allocation, acquisitions, operating performance and the preservation of the company’s decentralized structure under Abel and the new board leadership.

Looking ahead, the key developments will be how effectively Abel’s operating leadership and Howard Buffett’s board role complement one another, while Warren Buffett’s continued presence as a director provides an additional source of institutional knowledge. For global investors, Berkshire’s next phase will offer a closely watched test of whether a corporate culture built over six decades can remain consistent while leadership responsibilities move decisively beyond its founder.
