Key Points
- UPS estimates that logistics services associated with AI data centers represent a $15 billion annual opportunity, spanning airfreight, ocean cargo, warehousing and deliveries.
- The company expects demand to continue for decades, supported by both new construction and the ongoing need for replacement parts and equipment maintenance.
- UPS is prioritizing higher-margin businesses such as healthcare and data center logistics while reducing exposure to unprofitable deliveries. Its ability to sustain margin improvements will remain central to the strategy.
UPS Expands Its AI Infrastructure Logistics Business
UPS Chief Executive Carol Tomé sees the global artificial intelligence data center boom as a long-term growth opportunity, estimating that related logistics services could represent a $15 billion annual market.
The company provides a range of services for data center projects, including airfreight for advanced microprocessors, ocean transportation for large equipment, warehousing and deliveries to construction and operating sites. The opportunity extends across the supply chain, from manufacturing facilities to final delivery locations.
Global data center spending is estimated to reach approximately $1 trillion in 2026 and more than double before the end of the decade, as major technology companies including Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon invest heavily in AI infrastructure.
These facilities require substantial computing equipment and supporting electricity infrastructure, creating demand for specialized transportation and logistics services. Tomé expects the opportunity to persist for decades, including after facilities are completed, as operators continue purchasing replacement parts and maintenance equipment.
Higher-Margin Shipments Support UPS Strategy
UPS is pursuing a strategy focused on improving profitability rather than simply increasing shipment volumes. Under its “better, not bigger” approach, the company has been consolidating facilities, reducing costs and investing in technology to improve service quality and operational efficiency.
Its growth priorities include healthcare logistics, product returns and AI data center-related shipments. These segments offer opportunities to handle more specialized and potentially higher-margin shipments rather than relying primarily on large volumes of lower-margin deliveries.
UPS recently raised its annual revenue and profit forecasts after reporting stronger-than-expected third-quarter results. The company’s expanding data center business is contributing to its broader effort to improve the quality of its revenue, although Tomé did not disclose the segment’s current revenue.
The business has not yet reached the scale of UPS’s healthcare division, which generated $3 billion in revenue in the latest quarter.
Healthcare Logistics Provides a Growth Model
UPS has established a substantial position in specialized healthcare transportation, including temperature-controlled shipments of chemotherapy drugs, cancer treatments and direct-to-consumer GLP-1 weight-loss medications.
Following acquisitions and internal expansion, the company has become a major participant in the global healthcare logistics market, which was valued at $148 billion in the report. UPS generated $6 billion in healthcare revenue in 2020 and expects that figure to reach $13 billion in 2026, according to Tomé.
The healthcare business illustrates UPS’s strategy of pursuing specialized services that require more complex handling and can support stronger margins. Data center logistics represents a newer opportunity to apply a similar approach to a rapidly expanding infrastructure market.
Competition Intensifies Across Premium Logistics
UPS is competing with FedEx for higher-margin business as both companies reduce their exposure to low-margin and unprofitable deliveries. FedEx has established a dedicated team to pursue data center-related opportunities and is scheduled to report quarterly results on Wednesday.
At the same time, Amazon, Walmart and regional delivery competitors such as OnTrac are targeting domestic parcel shipments in selected markets.
UPS has reduced deliveries of millions of Amazon packages it considered unprofitable, a move that has helped improve its margins. Tomé said the company expects margins to continue improving annually.
The strategy reflects a broader shift toward profitability, with UPS seeking to prioritize customers and shipment categories that offer more attractive economics rather than competing for every available package.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors will be watching whether UPS can convert the estimated $15 billion data center logistics opportunity into sustained revenue and profit growth. The pace of AI infrastructure construction, demand for specialized equipment transportation and recurring maintenance shipments will influence the size and durability of the opportunity.
The company’s progress in healthcare and other premium logistics segments will also help demonstrate whether its strategy can deliver consistent margin improvements. Competition from FedEx and changes in domestic parcel volumes remain important factors as UPS continues to reshape its network around profitability.
