Tel Aviv Market Faces Broad-Based Selling
The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange closed Thursday, September 24, with a sharp decline across the main equity benchmarks. Tel Aviv-35 fell 1.26% to 4,242.12, while Tel Aviv-125 declined 1.39% to 4,100.40. The broader Tel Aviv-90 recorded the steepest decline among the three major indices, falling 1.84% to 3,677.85.
The weakness was broad rather than concentrated in a small group of companies. All major market segments listed in the session finished lower, pointing to a significant deterioration in market breadth compared with the previous trading day.
Market Breadth Signals Heavy Selling Pressure
The breadth figures highlighted the intensity of Thursday’s decline. Within the Tel Aviv-90, only six securities advanced while 83 declined. The Tel Aviv-125 showed a similarly negative pattern, with 11 advancers compared with 114 declining securities.
The Tel Aviv-200 fell 1.69%, while the Tel Aviv Sector-Balance index declined 1.66%. The Tel Aviv 90 and banks index also dropped 1.51%, indicating that weakness extended into the financial segment.
Smaller companies were not insulated from the selling pressure. The Tel Aviv-SME60 fell 1.37% to 1,308.37, broadly tracking the weakness across the wider equity market. The Tel Aviv-20 declined a comparatively smaller 1.08%.
Turnover Surges as Equity and Bond Activity Intensifies
Trading activity increased substantially during the session. Stock turnover reached approximately NIS 5.08 billion, with the Tel Aviv-125 accounting for approximately NIS 4.24 billion. Tel Aviv-35 turnover stood at approximately NIS 3.32 billion, while the Tel Aviv-200 recorded approximately NIS 4.31 billion.
Bond trading was even more active, reaching approximately NIS 9.61 billion. The elevated turnover across both markets suggests that Thursday was a highly active trading session as investors adjusted positions during the broad equity decline.
The combination of heavy turnover and strongly negative breadth provides an important context for the headline index losses. The declines were accompanied by substantial market participation rather than occurring during a particularly quiet session.
Individual Stocks Show Sharp Divergence
Despite the broad market decline, individual stocks continued to show significant variation. Nikes rose 4.62% to 13,600, making it one of the notable gainers within the TA-125 index.
Electra Real Estate moved sharply in the opposite direction, falling 11.16% to 1,839. The stock was the most notable decliner identified in the session, underscoring the elevated dispersion among individual companies even as the broader market moved lower.
Looking ahead, investors will be watching whether the sharp decline and unusually negative market breadth persist into the next session. The ability of the TA-35 and TA-125 to stabilize around their latest levels, together with the performance of the TA-90, will be important indicators of near-term market direction. Continued high bond turnover and further movements in individual stocks could also provide clues about changing positioning and risk appetite as trading resumes.
