Israeli equities closed with mixed results on Tuesday, August 4, as gains among large-cap stocks offset continued weakness in mid-cap shares. While headline indexes finished higher, market breadth remained negative, suggesting that the recovery was concentrated in select heavyweight companies rather than broadly distributed across the market.

The bond market outperformed equities during the session, posting solid gains and maintaining its role as a relatively defensive destination for investors amid continued market uncertainty.

Large-Cap Stocks Lift Main Benchmark Despite Weak Market Breadth

The TA-35 Index rose 0.81% to close at 4,144.98 points, recovering a portion of the previous session’s losses. However, the underlying market breadth remained soft, with only 14 advancing constituents compared with 21 decliners, indicating that gains were driven primarily by a limited number of heavily weighted stocks.

The broader TA-125 Index gained 0.45% to finish at 4,050.62 points. Despite the positive index performance, advancing securities totaled only 41 compared with 83 declining stocks, while one security remained unchanged. This divergence illustrates that larger companies outperformed smaller constituents within the benchmark.

Stock market turnover reached approximately NIS 4.65 billion, reflecting active investor participation as traders repositioned portfolios following recent market volatility.

The session demonstrated that while investor confidence improved toward Israel’s largest companies, broader participation across the market remained limited.

Mid-Cap and Value Stocks Continue to Lag

Mid-cap shares extended their recent weakness despite the gains recorded by blue-chip companies.

The TA-90 Index fell 0.86% to close at 3,751.96 points. Advancing securities numbered 27, while 62 declined, confirming continued selling pressure among medium-sized companies.

The TA-90 and Banks Index managed a modest gain of 0.14%, finishing at 3,942.15 points. Although the index closed higher, declining securities still outnumbered advancing stocks by 62 to 32, suggesting that a handful of stronger banking stocks supported the benchmark.

The TA-125 Value Index slipped 0.23% to 4,080.55 points. Only 16 securities advanced compared with 39 decliners, indicating that value-oriented shares remained under pressure.

The Tel Aviv Sector-Balance Index eased 0.10% to close at 4,600.66 points. Market breadth remained negative, with 66 declining stocks versus 34 advancing issues, reinforcing the view that weakness persisted across multiple sectors despite gains in headline indexes.

Overall, the market displayed a narrow leadership pattern, with blue-chip companies outperforming the broader equity universe.

Bond Market Extends Positive Momentum

Israel’s fixed-income market delivered another strong performance as investors continued allocating capital toward bonds.

The All-Bond General Index rose 0.12% to close at 432.11 points. Market breadth was particularly strong, with 513 advancing bond issues compared with just 74 decliners.

The Short-Term Bond Index gained 0.02% to finish at 477.35 points, maintaining its steady upward trajectory.

Corporate bond performance was mixed but generally constructive. The Tel Bond-Adjoined A Index edged down 0.06% to 438.59 points, while the Tel Bond 60 Adjacent Index advanced 0.11% to close at 428.42 points.

Bond market turnover totaled approximately NIS 5.04 billion, exceeding stock market turnover and highlighting continued investor demand for fixed-income securities alongside selective equity exposure.

Looking ahead, investors will monitor whether leadership broadens beyond large-cap stocks or if market gains continue to depend on a relatively small group of heavyweight companies. Upcoming corporate earnings, domestic economic indicators, global interest rate expectations, and geopolitical developments are likely to remain key drivers of sentiment. Improved market breadth would strengthen confidence in the current recovery, while continued divergence between large-cap and mid-cap performance could indicate that investors remain cautious about the broader economic outlook.
