Key Points
- U.S. Stocks Decline: The S&P 500 fell 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9% on Wednesday as hotter-than-expected annual inflation and losses in AI-related stocks weighed on market sentiment.
- Inflation Exceeds Forecasts: September consumer prices increased 3.7% year over year, above economists' expectations of 3.6%, while core inflation also came in slightly above forecasts.
- AI and Banking Stocks Under Pressure: CoreWeave plunged more than 16%, Oracle declined about 9%, and Bank of America fell 5% after missing revenue expectations, adding to broader market weakness.
Wall Street Pulls Back as Inflation Concerns Return
U.S. stocks declined on Wednesday as investors assessed stronger-than-expected inflation data and renewed selling across artificial intelligence-related shares. The S&P 500 fell 1.1%, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 47 points, or 0.09%, with gains in healthcare stocks including UnitedHealth and Amgen helping limit its losses.
The September Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.6% month over month, matching expectations, while the annual inflation rate reached 3.7%, exceeding the 3.6% forecast from economists surveyed by Dow Jones.
Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually. Both readings were slightly higher than economists’ expectations of 0.2% and 2.5%, respectively.
The figures raised questions about the inflation outlook and the Federal Reserve’s next policy decisions. Philip Blancato, chief market strategist at Osaic, said the report could bring a potential December rate increase back into consideration. He also suggested that higher oil prices could contribute to core inflation approaching 3% next year.
Elevated Oil Prices Add to Inflation Pressures
Energy costs remain an important factor for households and businesses. Gasoline prices were averaging $4.33 per gallon, compared with approximately $3.08 a year earlier, according to AAA.
U.S. crude prices also moved higher on Wednesday. West Texas Intermediate futures settled at $95.09 per barrel, a daily increase of 1.01%.
President Donald Trump recently announced a temporary easing of restrictions on Russian diesel fuel exports, but analysts cited in the source report do not expect the measure to substantially reduce fuel costs for truckers and farmers.
Higher energy prices can affect transportation, agricultural production and other operating expenses, potentially complicating the path toward lower inflation. However, Blancato described the latest inflation increase as potentially temporary and said he was not overly concerned about equity or bond markets, arguing that some of the pressure may already be reflected in asset prices.
AI-Related Stocks Extend Their Declines
Technology shares faced additional selling as investors questioned the debt financing supporting parts of the AI investment boom, particularly among companies outside the Magnificent Seven.
CoreWeave shares plunged more than 16%, while Oracle declined approximately 9%. Semiconductor stocks also weakened, extending their recent losses. Micron Technology fell 3%, Advanced Micro Devices dropped 5%, and Intel and Sandisk each declined 4%.
The declines reflect growing sensitivity to the costs and financing requirements associated with AI infrastructure. Investors are increasingly weighing the potential long-term benefits of AI investment against debt burdens, valuation levels and the returns companies may ultimately generate.
Continued weakness in AI-linked shares could remain a significant influence on broader market performance because of the sector’s importance to investor sentiment.
Bank Earnings Add to Market Weakness
Financial stocks also contributed to Wednesday’s declines. Bank of America shares fell 5% after its third-quarter revenue missed expectations. The bank also faced more than $1.2 billion in federal penalties following regulatory findings that it failed to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions.
Morgan Stanley reported quarterly results that exceeded expectations, but its shares were still trading nearly 4% lower. The contrasting developments illustrate how broader market pressures can outweigh company-specific earnings performance.
Investors Watch Inflation and AI Financing Risks
Markets now face several competing influences, including persistent inflation, elevated energy costs, uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy and concerns about AI-related borrowing.
Investors will be watching subsequent inflation readings, oil prices and corporate earnings for evidence that price pressures are easing or that financing risks are becoming more pronounced. The performance of technology stocks and the broader market’s response to interest-rate expectations will also remain important indicators of risk appetite.
