Key Points
- Raytheon has secured a multi-year U.S. military contract worth up to $6.3 billion to produce and sustain SM-3 Block IB missile interceptors.
- The five-year agreement includes two additional option years and supports efforts to replenish U.S. missile defense inventories.
- The award follows other major Pentagon contracts for Raytheon, highlighting rising demand for missile production and the challenge of expanding manufacturing capacity.
RTX’s Raytheon has secured a U.S. military contract valued at up to $6.3 billion, adding another major award to a series of agreements aimed at expanding American missile defense capabilities. The deal comes as the Pentagon seeks to replenish inventories used in recent conflicts and respond to growing demand for air and missile defense systems, placing defense manufacturers under pressure to increase output while managing production costs and supply-chain constraints.
Multi-Year Agreement Supports SM-3 Interceptor Production
Announced on October 8, the contract covers the production and sustainment of Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 IB) interceptors. The agreement runs for five years and includes two additional option years, giving the U.S. military a framework for longer-term procurement while offering Raytheon greater visibility into future production requirements. The maximum contract value is $6.3 billion; the final amount will depend on orders and the exercise of available options.
The SM-3 Block IB is a ship- and land-based interceptor designed to destroy short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during the midcourse phase of flight. The system is part of the broader U.S. missile defense architecture and supports efforts to protect military forces, allies and critical infrastructure against ballistic missile threats.
Part of a Broader Expansion in U.S. Missile Procurement
The award follows a series of substantial defense contracts as Washington seeks to increase the availability of key munitions. Earlier in October, Raytheon secured a separate agreement worth up to $24.4 billion for Standard Missile-6 interceptors. In September, the company also received a contract valued at up to $20.7 billion for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAM. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin won a $58.6 billion Patriot missile contract in July.
Together, the awards illustrate the scale of planned procurement and the importance of missile production within U.S. defense spending. For RTX, multi-year agreements can provide greater demand visibility and support investment in manufacturing capacity. However, maximum contract values should not be treated as immediate revenue, since deliveries, funding and exercised options determine how the work translates into financial results over time.
Manufacturing Capacity and Funding Remain Key Factors
Raytheon said production under the SM-3 Block IB contract will take place primarily at its facilities in Tucson, Arizona, and Huntsville, Alabama. The company has been investing in expanded capacity across its Standard Missile family as the Pentagon pushes contractors to accelerate deliveries and rebuild inventories.
Scaling production, however, requires more than new orders. Defense manufacturers must secure components, maintain skilled workforces and invest in facilities capable of meeting higher output targets. Industry executives have warned that uncertainty over congressional funding could delay some investments in production infrastructure and supply chains, creating a potential gap between announced procurement plans and actual delivery schedules.
Investors will be watching how quickly Raytheon converts these contracts into deliveries and revenue, whether funding remains sufficient to support the Pentagon’s procurement ambitions, and whether production expansion puts pressure on costs or margins. The SM-3 award reinforces the long-term demand outlook for missile defense, but its financial impact will depend on execution, contract funding and the pace at which manufacturing capacity can be expanded.
