Oil prices settled lower on Wednesday after a volatile session as the International Energy Agency agreed to accelerate the release of emergency oil stocks, seeking to ease pressure on global fuel markets. The decision came as the Iran war continues to constrain supplies, while renewed attacks by Yemen-based Houthi forces added another layer of uncertainty for energy markets.

IEA Moves to Accelerate Oil Stock Releases

The IEA’s decision to speed up the release of oil stocks represents a direct response to the sharp deterioration in global fuel-market conditions. The agency also agreed to prioritize diesel, reflecting concerns that refined fuel markets are facing particularly strong pressure as disruptions linked to the conflict affect available supply.

For global markets, the move provides an additional source of barrels at a time when geopolitical risks are limiting confidence in future supply. Emergency stock releases can help bridge temporary shortages, but their effectiveness depends on the scale and timing of the releases and whether physical supply disruptions continue. The latest decision therefore offers some relief to consumers and refiners without eliminating the underlying geopolitical risks.

Oil Prices Remain Above $100 Despite Intervention

Brent crude futures settled 38 cents lower, or 0.38%, at $100.20 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures declined $1.16, or 1.3%, to settle at $88.28 a barrel. The different magnitude of the moves highlights how geopolitical supply concerns remain more heavily reflected in international benchmark pricing than in the U.S. market.

The retreat came after a choppy trading session, indicating that investors remain highly sensitive to developments affecting global supply. Brent remaining around the $100 threshold also illustrates the degree to which geopolitical risk has become embedded in crude pricing, even as coordinated stock releases seek to moderate the impact on physical markets.

U.S. Inventory Data Offers a More Supportive Signal

Adding to the market’s mixed signals, U.S. crude oil inventories posted a surprise draw, according to the Energy Information Administration. A decline in domestic crude stocks generally points to firmer underlying demand or tighter near-term supply conditions, although the broader market impact depends on refinery activity and developments in refined-product inventories.

The inventory data therefore complicates the bearish effect of the IEA announcement. While additional strategic stocks could increase available supply, falling U.S. inventories suggest that physical market conditions remain tight enough to keep prices vulnerable to further disruptions.

Geopolitical Risks Remain the Key Market Variable

Houthi strikes have intensified concerns about potential disruptions to regional energy flows, reinforcing the market’s focus on the security of transportation routes and production infrastructure. The combination of the Iran war, regional attacks and constrained inventories means that even relatively small disruptions could have an outsized influence on prices if available supply buffers remain limited.

Going forward, markets are likely to focus on the pace of the IEA stock release, developments in U.S. inventories and the evolution of regional attacks. The critical question will be whether emergency supplies can sufficiently offset disruptions or whether prolonged geopolitical pressure forces crude and refined-product markets to absorb another period of elevated prices.
