Key Points
- Meta’s AI spending is accelerating, with analysts estimating capital expenditure reached $41.68 billion in the September quarter.
- Muse adoption and new AI products will be closely watched as Meta seeks to develop revenue streams beyond digital advertising.
- Wall Street expects revenue to rise 23.8% to $63.42 billion, while net income is projected to decline about 17% to $15.44 billion.
Meta Platforms is preparing to report third-quarter results with investors focused on whether its enormous artificial intelligence investments can translate into sustainable growth. The company’s expanding AI infrastructure, the adoption of its Muse personal assistant and prospects for new AI-driven revenue streams will be central to the market’s assessment of its strategy.
AI Spending Reaches a Critical Scale
Meta’s commitment to artificial intelligence has resulted in a dramatic increase in capital expenditure. Analysts estimate that capital spending more than doubled to $41.68 billion in the September quarter, highlighting the scale of infrastructure investment required to compete in an increasingly capital-intensive AI market.
The spending has already affected Meta’s financial flexibility. The company’s free cash flow was squeezed in the second quarter, while analysts expect the company to report a cash burn of $8.52 billion in the third quarter. For investors, the key question is whether this spending can ultimately generate sufficient incremental revenue and earnings to justify the financial commitment.
Muse Could Become a New Revenue Channel
Meta’s Muse personal assistant is another major focus of the quarterly results. The company has received a positive reception for the assistant, which offers subscription opportunities, while its latest AI models have also strengthened investor confidence in its execution.
Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is seeking to build AI products and services aimed at businesses and create a revenue stream beyond advertising. That strategy is particularly important as Meta competes with OpenAI and Anthropic in the rapidly developing AI market. The commercial adoption of Muse could therefore provide an early indication of whether Meta can turn its large AI infrastructure investments into a broader business opportunity.
Advertising Remains the Core Financial Driver
Despite the focus on AI, advertising remains central to Meta’s near-term financial performance. BofA Global Research analysts said recent AI launches have strengthened confidence in Meta’s AI execution, while their survey indicated healthy advertising demand during the quarter.
Wall Street expects Meta’s third-quarter revenue to increase 23.8% to $63.42 billion. However, that would represent a slowdown from approximately 28% growth in the previous quarter, reflecting intensifying competition from Google and TikTok. Analysts also expect net income to fall about 17% to $15.44 billion.
Investors Weigh Growth Against Capital Intensity
Meta’s financial outlook has not prevented analysts from becoming more constructive on its longer-term earnings potential. Morgan Stanley analysts raised their earnings estimates for 2027 and 2028, citing stronger advertising growth and the potential for new AI products to generate additional revenue despite higher spending.
However, Meta’s shares have gained about 7% this year, underperforming the roughly 12% rise in the S&P 500. That relative performance suggests investors are already weighing the benefits of AI expansion against the cost and execution risks associated with the strategy.
Going forward, the most important signals will be AI monetization, Muse adoption, advertising growth and capital expenditure. Meta’s ability to demonstrate that infrastructure spending can support stronger long-term revenue and earnings will be critical as investors determine whether its AI strategy represents a durable expansion opportunity or an increasingly expensive requirement to remain competitive.
