Meta is acquiring Swedish AI startup Stilla as the technology industry moves from conversational AI toward systems capable of executing tasks across business software. The transaction gives Meta additional agentic capabilities at a time when the company is seeking to turn its enormous messaging ecosystem into a broader commercial platform while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence.

Stilla Adds an Execution Layer to Meta Business Agent

Stilla, founded in Stockholm in 2024, has developed AI technology designed to maintain persistent organizational context and coordinate actions across workplace software. The startup emerged from stealth in January 2026 after raising $5 million in pre-seed funding led by General Catalyst. Its approach is focused on connecting fragmented information across tools so that AI agents can move beyond answering questions and execute tasks within business workflows.

That capability fits closely with Meta’s strategy for Business Agent. Meta introduced the product in June 2026 as an AI system that allows businesses to respond to customers, recommend products, qualify leads, book appointments and ultimately close sales across its messaging platforms. The company said more than 1 million businesses were already using Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger, while more than 1 billion active business conversation threads take place across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram every day.

Why Agentic Commerce Matters for Meta

The acquisition is strategically important because it potentially strengthens the connection between customer conversations and business execution. Traditional chatbots primarily provide information, while agentic systems can connect conversations with catalogs, customer-management systems, scheduling tools and other enterprise software. For Meta, that creates the possibility of keeping more of the commercial transaction inside its own ecosystem rather than simply directing users toward external websites.

Meta has already indicated that Business Agent will evolve beyond customer support. Its platform is designed to connect with hundreds of systems, including Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee, while providing businesses with controls and measurement tools. Stilla’s technology could therefore complement Meta’s existing infrastructure by improving how agents preserve context and coordinate actions across multiple applications.

AI Investment Is Becoming a Core Financial Priority

The acquisition also comes against the backdrop of exceptionally high AI spending at Meta. In the second quarter of 2026, Meta generated $60.8 billion in revenue, up 28% year over year, while capital expenditures reached $31.1 billion. The company expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of between $130 billion and $145 billion, reflecting the scale of its investment in AI infrastructure and related capabilities.

At the same time, the financial challenge is becoming more significant. Meta’s second-quarter operating expenses increased 55% year over year to $42.0 billion, while operating income declined 8% to $18.8 billion. That makes the development of AI products capable of creating new revenue streams increasingly important. Business Agent’s planned paid offerings could eventually provide Meta with a commercial model that complements its advertising business rather than relying exclusively on ad monetization.

Sweden Becomes Part of Meta’s AI Expansion

The Stilla transaction also reinforces the importance of European AI talent to Meta’s broader strategy. Meta plans to expand its presence in Sweden following the acquisition, giving the company access to a technology ecosystem that has produced a growing number of AI and software startups.

For investors, the more important issue is not the financial size of the Stilla transaction, for which terms have not been publicly disclosed, but whether Meta can integrate the startup’s technology into a commercial product at global scale. The company already has access to billions of users and millions of businesses; the next challenge is converting that distribution advantage into meaningful AI-driven economic activity.

Going forward, the key indicators will be the expansion of Meta Business Agent, the introduction of paid business features and evidence that AI agents can generate measurable commercial value for merchants. If Meta succeeds in connecting messaging, AI agents and transactions into a single workflow, the Stilla acquisition could become part of a broader shift in Meta’s business model from advertising infrastructure toward an increasingly automated commerce platform.
