Kalshi Secures $1 Billion in New Funding

Kalshi announced a $1 billion funding round on Thursday, bringing its valuation to $40 billion as the company seeks to broaden its business beyond prediction markets.

The round was co-led by Sequoia and Wellington, with Tiger Global Management and Dragoneer Investment Group also participating, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The latest financing follows a $1 billion round led by Coatue that valued Kalshi at $22 billion just over five months earlier. The increase represents approximately 82% growth in the company’s valuation over that period.

The funding reflects investor interest in Kalshi’s expansion plans as it seeks to build a broader financial trading platform.

From Prediction Markets to Multi-Asset Trading

Kalshi initially gained prominence through event-based contracts linked to areas such as sports and elections. It is now seeking to expand into a wider range of financial instruments and compete more directly with established exchange operators.

Its competitors include CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2026, Kalshi entered the perpetual futures market after receiving approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for the products. It initially offered cryptocurrency-linked perpetuals before expanding into equity indexes and metals.

Perpetual futures are derivative contracts without a fixed expiration date, allowing traders to maintain positions indefinitely without rolling contracts over at expiry. These products can also involve substantial leverage, which amplifies both potential gains and losses.

The expansion marks a shift in Kalshi’s ambitions, positioning the company to compete across a broader range of trading markets rather than relying primarily on event contracts.

Prediction Markets Face Legal and Regulatory Pressure

Kalshi’s growth comes amid continuing debate over the nature of prediction markets and the regulatory framework governing them.

Critics argue that some event-based contracts resemble gambling and may encourage addictive behavior. These concerns have become more prominent as prediction-market platforms have attracted greater attention and participation.

Earlier in the week, Utah’s attorney general brought criminal charges against Kalshi and two senior executives, alleging that the company illegally promoted online gambling.

The allegations introduce an additional uncertainty for a company seeking to expand into new products and markets. The funding announcement does not resolve the legal questions surrounding its existing business or future offerings.

Competition With Polymarket and Traditional Exchanges

Prediction markets gained prominence following the last US presidential election. According to Dune Analytics data cited in the report, Kalshi has overtaken rival Polymarket in market share over the past year.

Polymarket has faced delays in launching its US platform and a Commodity Futures Trading Commission investigation.

Kalshi’s expansion into perpetual futures could broaden its potential customer base while placing it in more direct competition with established exchanges. However, competing in derivatives markets requires navigating product-specific regulations and managing the risks associated with leveraged trading.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Investors will monitor whether Kalshi can translate its higher valuation and new funding into sustained growth across its expanding product range. Its ability to attract traders beyond sports and election-related contracts will be important to its multi-asset strategy.

Regulatory developments will remain equally significant. The outcome of legal challenges, the treatment of prediction-market contracts and the company’s ability to expand its derivatives business will help determine how far Kalshi can extend its position in financial markets.
